Need some help to imprve. Trying to get out and use new camera as much as I can. Bit disappointed with my efforts. What should I have done?

There's some nice tones there, plus you have a stream as a lead-in line. If you can revisit it, try getting closer to the ground, and also closer to the water, and shoot it looking down the stream along the tree line. This should give quite a nice image, and would also remove the half-trunk on the left hand side.
Good advice from Marky, needs a lift in PS probably curves, levels, ore hue/ saturation.
Looks a nice setting
Try and revisit early morning or late evening
Nice colours but IMO it looks a bit 'flat'. i agree with the view that if it is local try different times of day......have you tried in as a contrasty b/w version?
Some good advice already with the lower shooting angle but also try getting some good foreground interest in the shot.....such as tree stump, rocks/boulder even flowers or toadstools etc. The branch creeping into frame on the left doesn't do anything for the shot (I know sometimes it can't be helped) so check before taking the shot and either physically remove such offending items or recompose without these encroaching in the shot. Also...and this may not help you, the sky is kinda lifeless, either keep it out of shot (if the sky has nothing to add) or expose for the sky and use exposure compensation to expose as far to the right without blowing the sky or other highlights out.
You could also try to get up close and isolating certain things of the scene.
HTH.

Thank you all for looking and taking the time to give your advice which I do appreciate. The weather was a bit dull today but I wanted to go out and practice. I'm still getting to grips with the controls as this is my first DSLR but thoroughly enjoying the learning experience :)
