View Full Version : Little advice on a new lens..........
Hi guys
I like motor sport and taking pics of such........currently have a canon 400d with a 18-55 kit lens.
Would like a bit more zoom but have no idea what to get.
Looked on good old ebay etc but there are so many out there i would like some advice on what is good and bad etc please.
Not sure of a budget as i have no idea what they cost
Any advice would be great.
a couple of options for you, if you are on a budget then your only real option is the Sigma 75-300 APO, it has to be the APO version though, there is a cheaper option but it's crap, the APO version is about £150 new, however, if you can afford it, go for the Canon 70-200 F/4 L as it offers a much better image quality and build quality and a bit more street cred :D, i'd budget around £300 for a mint used example and worth every penny, if you get bored or upgrade, you won't lose much money (if any) on it, it'll easily sell again for £280-£300. If you've got even more to spend then you need the 100-400 F/4-5.6 L, this can be had for about £720 used or anywhere between £850 - £1000 new. This lens will give you a lot more reach than the 70-200.
Cheers Wez.....didnt pay that much for the camera lol

Cameras come and go but lenses last a lifetime :)
For motorsport you need something in the -300 range. I started with Sigma 70-300 then upgraded to the 100-300 f4
off topic, i'll be going to Croft in June for the BTCC, i posted a thread in the meeting section of these forums, i have a 70-200 F/4L + 2xteleconvertor (makes it 140-400mm) but when i was there last time, i had my cheap 75-300 canon lens and it sufficed quite easily.
