Hi all, went to Rockingham on Sunday, my first ever outing with a camera of any sort! Most of these pictures will be of our car but there should be a few others. I was trying to get some perspective of speed. I read a few posts on the site and 'tried' to implement the suggestions! Please feel free to comment in s i m p l e terms, Chris.

11PM the night before we left!

I managed to get the background blurred and the car fairly sharp, why aren't the wheels moving?

Again, what did i do wrong? Oh, that isn't a 'shopped flame, either!

Those wheels seem to be moving but i used the same settings on the others.

What settings DID you use? Anyway, looks like the Honda has thicker spokes. You'll need to use a slower shutter speed to get the same sense of movemont as a car with many thin spokes.

your shutterspeed on the first one is 1/500th, which is far too quick, try using something in the range of around 1/100th- 1/250th (or even slower if you can hold it!) to blur movement, use panning to blur the background not depth of focus, so try using shutter priority and let the camera sort out the aperture.

panning might take a while to perfect but its worth it :)

Hmmm, thanks for the comments. I think i need a lot, lot more practice. I was using a fast shutter speed to keep a bit of the light out, maybe my ISO was too high, although i'm sure it was about 400. I was trying the panning technique, I thought ' That'll be easy as...' until i tried it.

comparing the honda and the mazda side on shots:

the reason the wheels are more blurred on the mazda is because the mazda is more zoomed in. Its all about the distance a point on the object travels on your sensor in that moment in time. The honda is further away so the wheel spoke might have only travelled say 1 pixel on the sensor. In the mazda photo it might have travelled 3 pixels because its much larger on the sensor.
its hard to explain, but i hope this makes some sense.
You can also see the difference in blur on the numbered sign in the background.

of course, the honda might have been doing 30mph and the mazda 160 :)

and...

resizing the mazda to the same size as the honda, makes it look like its going the same speed as the honda

Other thing is, colours look a bit odd in some, what white balance settings are you using? Or is it intentional?

Erm, auto I assume. I never change it, I'm not that intelligent
