US based blogger Shawn King organises monthly "timeshoots" as an interesting alternative to meets. Basically it involves anyone who wants to participate taking a picture at exactly the same time - regardless of where they are in the world - and then posting it on a flickr site.
The next one is at 6pm US Eastern Time on Sunday 9 March. I make that 11pm here in the UK, so an indoor shot then. Shawn says that future timeshoots will be rotated to more friendly hours in other time zones.
If you are interested read more here (http://cameracon.ning.com/profiles/blog/show?id=1970429%3ABlogPost%3A6569).
I've haven't done one, but it sounds as though it could be fun to see just what people take at that same moment...
