I took these shots at Etherow Park after work today.
It's only my second attempt at birds and I still only have the 18-55 kit lense on my Nikon D40 so I'm restricted to trying to capture the larger species at the moment.

I'm a little disappointed that the light was poor again this afternoon because I was honoured by the presence of a Swan at a range to the liking of my lense...

As I was snapping the Swan shots, a Mallard seemed to come out of nowhere...

I was dumbstruck and totally transfixed as I watched this bold little fella jump on the Swans back and bite it's neck.
I watched the commotion unfold and suddenly and rather belatedly something inside my head said "you really should take a picture of this!" :bonk:

Anyway, the moment had all but passed before I reacted, but I managed to capture the endgame...

#5 is my favourite :)
Btw., swans are amazingly stupid animals. Probably because they have really small brain.
