Got an email and flickr message today advising that one of my photo's has been shortlisted for inclusion in the forthcoming schmap guide!

I've never heard of them, but from a google search they seem like big enough outfit, no payment if published, but I'd get credited for it!

Anyone know anything about schmap?

Should I be pleased?

here's the photo...

It's one of the earlist ones that I've taken with my 350D and not that great a photo if I'm being honest!!!

They've asked for two of mine. One in Glasgow and one for their Florida guide. I've not responded yet.

They must scan flickr at this time of the year for new images or something. The two they chose of mine are not particularly good so I guess I wouldn't be too bothered if they did rip them off.

I got an offer as well. If you're into letting people make money from your photos while you don't, I guess it's fine (they're paid by advertising, and populate the site as cheaply as possible, hence the free pics request). I had a read of their Ts&Cs and decided no thanks.

Yip, don't get too excited. They have several thumbnails of various spots on their maps and, as Moadib says they get paid by advertising - so how many times have you clicked into their site? ;)

one of mine is on Schmap guide. They've been doing it for few years, its not how good your image is, works on principle if it fits the bill & you agree to use of photo. Search criteria is usually the name of a pub, club, place etc

ps one they chose of mine wasnt particularly good lol

Yeah I got the same message for a shot of the Falkirk Wheel - They only post a 150 pixel wide thumnail directly linked to your flickr shot with a nice big credit, which doesnt sound too bad to me - nicely made site and nice and clear and simple system they have in place. If it gets me a few more views on Flickr then so be it :) not like they are selling the image or anything.

I've had 3 of these requests so far, and have declined each time.

I agreed to the first couple they asked for a couple of years ago but definitely wouldn't again - they're just trying to get photography on the cheap.

They don't do the guide for free, or give free advertising, so why should you work for free!

As far as I can tell the guide is free to use, I would argue that linking to my photo which is credit to my company on their site for free would mean they DO give free advertising, and it is hardly work - It is a photo I had already taken for another purpose or just for fun that they are only using a thumbmnail of.

I just done see the big deal - or the downside to this.
