I have a tip for you, get in the queue at about 5.30AM if you want to get near the front, I was down there for 2 days last year and it is mayhem,I found it better in a farmers field on practice days, he charges £10 and thee is toilets and a burger van, it is a superb location right on the runway. This was taken from the farmers field.

I went last year and got some more than acceptable shots using my 70-300mm IS, even in the cruddy weather that was the Sunday!! :) I'd say as for tips using as high a speed as you can, AI Servo and Burst mode and as many memory cards as you can muster!! I wish I was going this year with my 40D -- I think that would hold it's own at RIAT!!

I'd say try and get to the front of the flightline as you can, also set aside some time for wandering around looking at the statics using a wide-angle lens too! :)

Oh and I'm banned from RIAT this year, our 2nd baby is due on the July 5th, so apparently RIAT is out - don't understand why!! :nono::nono:

Also - I'd say try and get there for one of the "arrivals" or the departure days - you'll get shots of alot of planes not normally seen in the air too! :) Oh and one last thing - enjoy the Raptor and hopefully the vulan - I'm looking forwards to seeing some nice shots of those displays!!!!

How are they with cameras and 'big lenses' at RIAT?

I haven't been for a few years, but last time I did I only took a FinePix and they examined the camera and its little bag with such interest that I thought they would refuse me entry. I feel I might get shot if I try and take the 1Ds!

Abs - I went with my slingshot full of lenses and a 20D - and they didn't even open the bag.

They don't bat an eyelid, in fact - I think it's required gear nowdays! ;)

I thought 'Ferocious Frankie' was the one that lived at Duxford? Not to say that there isn't two there :bonk:

I could be very wrong and don't mind being corrected! :) I know that the one that's 'based' at Filton isn't there all the time....I'll do some checking!! :)

EDIT: Done some digging and many apologies, it's "Miss Helen" G-BIXL/472216 that visits Filton for maintenance, and her colours are Silver & Blue!

I'm intending to go to RIAT this year, weather depending. I'd be interested in some info on this farmers field, please. I've just got hold of a 100-400mm, so looks like a good location to put it through it's paces.

Cheers,

John.

I'm working again at RIAT so I'll be down there with my D200, 24-70 & 120-300. There's nothing like wandering round the aircraft with your camera before the public are allowed in...

Just done the staff registration today so I'm going to be onsite for 6 days. Can't wait to see the F22 Raptor screaming round the field.

There are 3. Ferocious Frankie belongs to ofmc (and is sometimes based at Benson through the airshow season), Twilight tear who belongs to TFC and they also own Miss Velma.

malla1962 - Could you have a look at the map and maybe give me some details of where you were in the farmers field.

Im off up there on the Thursday and staying at a campsite overlooking the runways, maybe if anyone else is coming we could meet up or something.
