Hi Guys,
Here's a couple of Ripon Cathedral, early attempts at using HDR, think this type of subject is what HDR was invented for !
Would love to hear your comments, good bad or otherwise !

I tend to disagree (amicably I hope) that architectural shots were what HDR was invented for, I have yet to see any realistic genre of photography where it is suitable, and these are no exception, mainly because (in this instance) there are no shadows, so it looks like a modern supermarket, with flat/shadowless lighting. Old buildings like this need that feature, to give depth, mood, relevance and meaning to the composition.
This fails on all counts, which is a pity, as it looks an excellent composition, and would probably shine with a 'normal' post process.

Thanks for the reply Les,
Will have a go at grocessing the raw that looks to have the most promise from both shots and see what I can make of them and post up the reults, in the past when I've taken images in churches (thats what I meant by 'this subject being ideal), I've always been dissapointed that if I get the windows exposed correctly the rest is wrong, and is I get the architecture right the windows are usually blown out !, either that or perhaps I just have to work harder on my shooting/processing technique.
Thanks again !

Here ya go Les, 1 raw frame, levels adjusted, and verticals corrected, no multi layers or dodging and burning.
What do you think ?, I think it's a nice image and now I've seen it can't make up my mind which I like most

And here's the other one with the same simple 1 frame treatment

I think what Les said in the first instance was spot on. And now that I see the non HDR images, I must say he was bang on. Both images have very nice compositions, and the new shots are fantastic. Good stuff :)

Yep, you have put the 'soul' back into the image that HDR (as almost always) takes out.
Good work.

:agree:
I too much prefer the untouched versions. I think too it would be nice to see the original in colour. Seems a potential shame to lose the colour and detail of the stained glass.
And its another vote for the non HDR versions, there is more grit and mood about them.Don,t give up on the HDR though it takes time and practice to master it but its only half the processing then you still need good processing skills in photoshop to bring it all together, were all learning.

they look like something out of a very old book on ripon...like your not sur eif its a pencil drawing or a photograph
I prefer the non-HDR shots, but I think they're just lacking a really good black to put some atmosphere into them. Nothing that can't be tweaked though.
