Haven't really shot anything worthwhile on film recently. I did get some test shots back from my first rolls of slide (Velvia 50). Real pain to scan or maybe my exposures are off (don't have a lightbox to judge, a lot of them seem dark, if I hold them real close to a desklamp I can see a lot of shadow detail that the scanner is missing).

Can only seem to bracket in full stops with the above cameras rather than the preferred 1/2 or 1/3 stops.

I am struggling with it all - in part as I need to raise some money, so will need to seel one of the MF cameras - either the Mamiya RZ67 or the Mamiya 6..
Thanks to some advice from another TP member, the 6 might be staying as the 6 suits my photography more.
Anyone need a well used RZ67, complete with 3 lenses, 3 backs and a motorwind ?
I also need a darkroom, rather than waiting till back in the UK to get stuff processed, but in time.....

I frequently shoot Delta 3200 @ 6400. I soup in boring middle of the road D-76 but I like the results.
These are awful scans, recompressed a few times - but they're all I have to hand & I can't be bothered to scan anything for you :D

Medium Format, so inherently less grainy, and fairly big 6*7 MF at that :

Yeah, not too much as to detract from the image itself, but enough to give it a raw and gritty feel. If I could get that in 6x6 or 6x7 id be happy. :)

OK, the film was HP5, the camera was an Olympus OM2, I have no idea about developing etc, but it may have been whatever the standard Ilford developer was way back then - Ilfobrom or something ?. I expect the film was uprated a bit, as I too like grain, so maybe 800 or 1200asa (or ISO as we now call it)

There has been a lot of talk about Medium Format recently, but for grain, 35mm would seem a good way to go, and they are all so cheap now - especially if you can get a camera that will take the same lenses as your digital body..

Here's a shot I took a couple of weeks ago at Blenhiem Palace.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2268/2425299811_d9e9fe3a48.jpg

HP5 developed in Ilford LC29. I used a Nikon F90x with an old 24-120mm lens, this lens comes in for a lot of criticism for some reason but I've had some good results with it. I took a load of colour digital shots the same day but this remains my favourite. Black & white seems to reveal a whole different world of tone & shade that's sometimes swallowed up when shot in colour.

joxby
22-04-2008, 21:35
yep, at first glance it looks a shade light, but a proper look shows it covering black to white and every shade of grey in between.
Its just a light scene:thumbs:

I used some LC29, I liked it, I didn't want to throw away the last bit in the bottle, even though it didn't make up the 50ml to develop a roll, so I topped it up with ilfosol:lol:,half & half.
Couldn't tell the difference, they are very similar.

Can they do B&W in that time frame too? I'm sick of jessops taking three weeks to return my films*, and It's not like I wouldn't mind popping into Leeds every once in a while anyway.

But I'm not at school as of last week, and whilst i have a small organo-synthetic lab in my shed, I don't have and can't yet afford a changing bag and darkroom equipment.

(also can one formulate one's own darkroom chemistry, are there guides available?)

Jessops sub the work out to one of the pro labs anyway and add their own margin, so you're probably a) paying too much b) incurring extra delays.

Home B&W developing is easy and really rewarding. Changing bags can be bought for less than a tenner and chemicals & gubbins for less than £20 so it doesn't take long for it to pay for itself.

That's where I go, CCimaging (http://ccimaging.co.uk/cci/), not the cheapest but I feel kinda lucky there is a medium format E6'r locally, no posty nonsense.

I've been doing my processing at CC for more than twenty years, they are the best professional lab in the area, I never trust my work to the post after a bad experience with some lost films many years ago.

Those are great for cheap film, oddly smooth looking with nice calm colours.
What type of film is it ?

And whilst I'm on it, directed at this thread in general, theres no exif peeps.
There are hundreds of different films, and quite a few ways to process them.
I for one would like to know what everyone uses and if it was processed particularly, its nice to compare film for film, you get to recognize the characteristics of particular films and even their manufacturers.

Thank you so much for the kind words. I agree. I have been shooting digital for about 8 years or so and took up film about 6 months ago. Quickly, I fell in love with it and find myself shooting more film than digital, well almost. It has a certain look about it. Perhaps it is the film grain that makes it attractive. What ever it is they look more alive to me.

The only EXIF info you will get is what ever software or scanner you used to put your image unto the computer.
I primarily shoot black and white and use kODAK Tri-X...I send my stuff to a pro lab for development although I do want to learn how to do it myself.

Yeah, I know, this film forum is only 4 months old:baby:, it was digitally dominated, peeps are used to posting...or at least are aware their photos may contain exif, its easy to forget scans say nothing about the film used.
I just think its great to see an image and think, blimey, I like that, what film is it, I'll give it a shot...y'know.
I have 5 rolls of Velvia 50 new mix to shoot, haven't seen any here yet.
And a big pile of 320TX, (kindly donated by a NewYork studio), I don't actually like Kodak, it sends my fixer pink, but if I see some B/W here I like, I may be tempted to use it:lol:
Thats a lie, I'm gonna use it anyway..

I wish I had one of those. The pro place I use has one of those. They give me the negatives and the images are put on a cd rom. I myself have a HP scanner with Vue Scan software. I can scan my own negatives or images, but since they started to offer a cd rom with all the images on it for $2.50, i decided to do that instead. This way I can choose what I want printed.

Yeah, I used a full roll of 50 on a poppy field.
I don't see a lot of difference between 50 and 100f, I think I'd rather stick with the extra speed of 100 in good light.
Velvia 50 probably comes into its own during longer exposures..

Shots are cool, for an 8 year old, definitely got the eye

I don't think they're as sympathetically scanned/pp'd as they could have been.
I think they are better than the scans suggest, but that's always the caveat when someone else does it, they have they're own idea of how they should look.
Its little things like the halos and usm, things you would try to correct if you were doing it yourself, that spotty herbert at scans'r'us wouldn't bother with.
I can't say nothing about scans really, mine are slide copied......
You could check the negs and see if there are focus problems, hence the usm, and/or under-exposure issues.
You should chuck him a roll of slide film, see what he makes of them..:)

Ere, do you want it sprog, I can't match my ambition with action, heck, I'm not even shooting b/w:lol:

Wouldn't mind joxby, what's the shelf life on an unopened bottle? I fell for that once with some Ilford stuff and all my film came out bright purple and blank, probably not worth the risk come to think about it.:'(

What would you peeps recommend for a fine grain developer? I've read about some using very low concentrations and long development times to get the best tone & detail.

After 6 months in limbo we've just arrived at our new house and in the mean-time I've bought a scanner. As I was unpacking I came across these from my time out in the Balkans and given this week's events it seemed appropriate to chuck these up. They not for crit just for sharing, it was my first slr and I didn't know one end from the other, an Olympus IS-500 if memory serves me. Believe it or not I knew less about photography then than I do now ;).

We were asked to airlift two airconditioning units onto the top of these new UN or NATO buildings that were built in Sarajevo.

Quality control is foremost. So, consumers are always assured fresh delivery daily. What's more, the Farmer John family responds to consumer demand with a growing selection of wholesome meat products. They include: a full line of lean, fresh-cut pork, savory sausage, wonderful wieners, franks, Polish sausage, bacon in two thicknesses, boneless smoked fully cooked ham, as well as a full assortment of pre-packed ready-to-eat luncheon meats, liver spreads and more. Hot or cold, for breakfast, lunch or dinner, Farmer John products always reflect high values and low prices. On the holidays, every day, families who know what's best put Farmer John products between their knives and forks.

The pork plant, located south of Los Angeles in Vernon, became a tourist attraction in 1957 when set painter Les Grimes was hired to decorate one of its walls with a farm scene.

1969.....

like, my digital 1's and 0's will still be around in 39 years.....I think not, they're lucky to last a week the way I "filter" rubbish.

I like that, the darkness surrounding everything makes it quite abstract.

Thanks sprog,
I can't advocate the use of polarisers with already insanely coloured film, but it was worth it to see the water running down the beach.
I really need a 50 for this mamiya

Minolta Dimage Scan Multi 2.
Had problems with it, but after I re-installed windoze I've been fairly impressed, its at least as good as most flatbeds without the huge flatbedness, I think it will perform better with less than perfectly exposed negs, than a flatbed would.

ha ha, we're not in competition, although I'd rather be looking for an RB 50, than mine.....50's are the nuts.
Thats bonza, and confirms I forgot to compensate for that polariser..

That boat could be sharper, but the grass bottom right is.
It hardly seems to matter when they come out like that anyway , ubersharp is just....well....not a deal breaker anymore..

The boat is blurred, he was moving at a fair lick as he was sailing with the wind.

I added two stops, but think 1.5 would have been better.
