OK- I'm probably going to be shooting a few 6X7 colour trannies. I find the processing side a PITA tbh, but I can just about cope with processing E6 stuff in the kitchen at home if I have to, as a get around for the endless wait of sending them away. If I do that, anyone know the cheapest scanner which will cope with 6X7 trannies?
What I'd really like to do is drop 'em in somewhere, go for a cuppa and then pick 'em up. Is there anywhere left like that?
We're talking 120 roll film obviously.
Am I sounding like a dinosaur? :exit:

I reckon there are still plenty of places Cedric ...
Places like this where you drop off for same day service ...
http://www.photofusion.org/filmprocessing/bwprocess.htm
Or others where you can do the modern 'on-line' thing ...
http://www.thephotoshoponline.co.uk/
Not sure what's up your way though ...
Hope you find somewhere and we get to see the results of your efforts with the new (old) toy ... :D
:p
I need to do some research locally but I'm not too hopeful Rog. The local Jessops tell me they send them away for processing and they can scan them to CD. 2 weeks turn round though!

I use an Epson Perfection 4870... I think that's the number... get one of those and you won't go wrong. Don't think they make them any more :( but I'm sure there's some around second hand ... sorry, pre-owned!
Cheers Barry I did see those and I think there are later models with the same capabilities. That probably is the best (cheapest anyway) option.

If you've got to wait that long Cedric you might as well send them off to Peak Imaging and get them to scan them as well as taking away the processing hassle
Indeed Barry. I dunno which way to go yet. :D

Thanks again Rog. I used Colab in Brum for years and always personally dropped and collected wedding photos rather than trust the mail. It's about a twenty mile round trip for me using just about the worst stretch of motorway in the country - Junction 9 M6 to Spaghetti :gag:
Colab have now merged with someone else to form One Vision Imaging and they now seem to be centralised in Coventry which is quite a distance.
I suppose the sensible thing to do is just suck on it and mail 'em off! :D

I would rekon one vision would be good for the developing and you could buy a flat bed scanner with a medium format template. If you've got a spare 3 grand you could buy a nikon medium format and 35mm scanner? If you want send them up my way and I'll scan them on the college medium format scanner? :)

Hi I'm not sure if already set off to the lab but since your West Midlands you might give The Darkroom a try, based in Cheltenham. Cost fro 120 E6 by post is £3.70, including freepost, which takes some beating. They've been around for years and are reliably quick
http://the-darkroom.co.uk
They can scan as well for an extra £11.00 per film but the files size varies on 120 - something around 15Mb is what I get

I'm with Chuckles on this - I use Peak imaging and have nothing but good things to say about them, quality results & fairly quick turn around (sent Mon got back Fri).
I recently had a couple of cracking Xpan shots from Glencoe that I wanted to adjust and blow up to A3, so I sent off the negatives and went through what post processing I wanted with the technician over the phone (bit like distance Photoshopping) and hey presto they arrived 4 days later exactly how I wanted them. This maybe a service you want to consider if you want to do the same.

A bit like when the tog would tell the printer what he/she was trying to achieve in the camera and the printer would pull a rabbit from the hat and make it happen for them. ;)
Man you would not believe the number of supposedly well trained and experienced snappers I used to tow out of that well know creak when they couldn't paddle for toffee. :D

Yea, point taken - but you don't know what I had done (not much) I was only trying to purvey their capabilities.
Besides, all the top film togs in the world crop, dodge & burn to fine tune a worthwhile image.

Sorry! I didn't type that out too well did I. I didn't mean to imply that you had been rescued by a printer, just that a good working relationship between printer and snapper used to be common place. I kind of rambled off topic though and one thing had nothing to do with the other.
If anything, people doing their own PP and printing these days has probably made then more aware of what needs to be right to make a good finished image.

You're right in a way though Dazzajl. It is sometimes necessary to get the printer to bring detail out in certain areas as transparencies are difficult to balance exposure, with subjects that include high contrasts - snow, ice, shadows & sun.
Wondered off from the subject of scanning I think.
It's a pity you don't like further south - as city photo in southampton do a three-hour turnaround for 120 film.
Have you tried contacting any independent photo shops in yr area - they might?
Good thought - unfortunately the independent photo shops which used to be in this area were either bought out by Jessops, or closed down by competition from Jessops when they were taking over the world a few years back. ;)
I'm sure there'll be somewhere - it's just finding 'em.

What lenses did you get with it? have you any film yet?
I got the 90mm f3.8 with the camera which is considered the standard lens and the one usually sold with the body.
I've since added the 50mm f4.5, as I'm primarily interested in tackling (shock horror) one or two landscapes. As I live right in the middle of the urban sprawl, that's not a casual undertaking, but it will definitely be happening.

Thanks Ven....it never occurred to me, to look on the net! :bonk:
nah, you did it, I just pointed out the button:)
Well, to go with Vens fab find, I can describe how to use mine, which is similar....but even more ancient:banana:
http://i27.tinypic.com/2zokqo0.jpg
1. Set the iso speed of the film you are using -
Its that red window, you have to press the little locking button at the bottom of the meter and rotate the white disk to select iso.
2. Take a meter reading -
If its a scape, just hold it vertically in the direction of your scene, mine reads 200 in this picture.
3. Calculate -
Rotate the black disk so that the arrow points at the meter reading marked on the extreme outer ring (body of the meter, it doesn't move).
4. Read it -
Shutter speed is on the white disk, F/stop is on the black, where they match each other is your choice of settings.
On my meter it says f/8 @ 1/800th or f/9 @ 1/600th or f/14 @ 1/250th, and so on....any of those should give good exposure.
On the back of the meter, you might have a door with holes in it that cover the selenium, if you open that door it changes the scale and allows you to meter in lower light, this clunky old clonker meters up to 90 seconds, which is quite a dark scene

Mamiya = Medium format at a fraction of the cost of a Hassy, loads of lenses and spares available at very reasonable prices and just plain fun!
Go on then CT what would you have bought?

 @ CT ... :suspect:
:p
LOL. I'm just yankin' Ven's chain Ali. The RB 67 is my favourite MF camera of all time. I've loved 'em since I first clapped eyes on one, and I have got an RB 67 Pro S. In fact, I may just buy the factory. :D
Can I have a discount then CT? :)

This place near where I live does 120 processing :)
£8.50 (may have gone up) for process and scan. Gave a film in yesterday so just wait to see what it comes out like, both shot wise and process wise.

Sorry - The Mamiya Corporation weren't impressed with my offer!

Loving the thing, the 6x7 format is gorgeous though you definitely need your wits about you and rushing things is not a good idea.
There you go - that's nice!

Thanks guys, it was just a test shot really, to make sure there were no major glitches with the camera. All seems to be o.k. I've been out in 'the field' with it all today and my back is killing me.
Time to soak the old bones I reckon.
Has anyone tried dlab7 for processing? I was ordering film from 7dayshop.com and picked up a voucher for cheap processing whilst I was at it. Just wondered if anyone else has used them.
Well, the Mamiya got an outing today. Little 'un's birthday this weekend so have munched my way through some B&W HP5. I'll try to get it developed tomorrow if I can shift the washing out of the utility room!
Now, what remperature do I need that blooming developer again?
Must go and read the instructions.........several times.............it's been 25 years you know! (Yes I started young you cheeky sods!) :)

I get some 120 E-6 done there occasionally. The 20-pack of vouchers from 7dayshop make them very cheap.
The results are always spot on* but things can take a while going to and from guernsey. With customs there's always a small chance that something will just go AWOL, too, so I'd not have anything really important done with them (not that I've had any issues with ~50 rolls).
*They pay attention when they cut & sleeve. I've given them all sorts of weird stuff with very hard to see & very thin frame boundaries that aren't at all standard and they've been spot on. They have seperate sleeves for really long stuff like panos so they don't just try to shoehorn your film into a normal 120 sleeve.
tl ; dr ~ they do a great job at a great price but their location makes them slow & potentially unreliable.
Cheers Hoodi. just got to finish the roll off and I'll get it sent to them.

Just waiting ot get my roll back. Can't wait. I'm hoping it turns out fine and not a waste of a buy of a MF camera
We shall see
I have a medium format camera and when I got mine developed at Klick, it only cost me £5.99 for two 120 film!
Apart from it took two weeks to come back to me! Though I got some great shots; however, I need a light meter- anyone know where I could get a good one cheap?
Have a look for Weston Masters on ebay. Failing that some of the second hand dealers in the mags.
Good luck!

I purchased my old Weston Master 5 from Ffordes pretty reasonably priced and it works great and is simple to use ... :suspect: ... once you get the manual ... :D
