Hi, was out playing around last night trying out some stuff and new ideas at a local race. Basically testing things out before the major championships start. This ones had a bit of PP done to it (edit: image has been desaturated and a few actions ran on it so its not meant to look actual)
Rider was doing about 30mph, lens was 70-200 VR @ 70 with VR on, SB800 on manual at 1/16 pwr with no diffusion, D2x @ 1/200 @ f11

Good image, tight crop works well, one niggle-the skin tones look waxy-suspect due to noise reduction?

I love the pain on his face, I used to TT so I know what he is going through. Great shot.

Iain,
Your work has gone from strength to strength, and I now without a doubt class you as the most stylised snapper I know. I love it mate. Really, of late your work is nothing short of mind blowing and makes me want to throw the towel in.
I think the shape of the image throws it slightly so I would loose the top to a 7 x5 shape. (imo)
pete.

badronald, yeah I know how it feels ,I used to be his team mate and try hang on to him, he's x Scottish champion, 10 mile in 20:18 mins if I rem right.
Ok, heres the normal edit I would usually do. btw if his skin tone looks a little reddish its not PP...cold night and he was pumping! I thought it was me at first and tried to remove it!

Pete mate...I look up to you as the standard!!
Just been pushing the bounderies more , what the heck if it works it works, if not, sit down and plan it all over again!
A world duathlon champion has agreed to a full shoot, swim bike and run so just can't wait for that one.
Yeah the crop would prob be better 5x7, just liked the overall feel to it. Got it as a background on my MAC at 24" :D

Outstanding once again Ian
Like the edited version as it makes the rider pop, agree about tighter crop on the top of the image.

Iain, this one's a cracker, especially after the crop. It makes me think of Capa's quote, "If your shots aren't good enough, you're not close enough." He was talking about war photography but I think it applies to sport too. Suffice to say, you were close enough. ;)

Sorry to take this slightly off topic but can anyone explain why cyclists like this, who reach good speeds don't wear knee pads or similar protection to prevent serious injury in the instance of an accident?

Twould be major uncool....just like riding an expensive bike with hairy legs
Actually, most injuries you tend to find is collar bone and road rash.

Great shot Iain, No doubt you've gone from strength to strength

That first one is brilliant, almost has an HDR look about it.
20.18 is a bloody good time as well 4m 52 sec faster than me :)
Wow nice, liking that alot mate.
And yeah on the knee pad thing, no way, and tbh normally if you fall most of the impact is though the arm, the reason being you bodys naterual reaction is try and brake the fall, as your feet are secured to the pedals, you cannot usaully get them released quick enough if falling at speed, so your arm/hand comes into play hence the shoulder injury's. The pedals normally stick out a tad more then you knees too which again reduces the impact on the knees, how every nothing stops the gravel rash once you on the deck sliding, and that is bloody painfull. But you never think about falling, when do thats normally when you do. But the buzz is unreal.

Generally speaking the knees are alright in an accident, hips, elbows, collar bone, etc all take much more of a bashing.
On top of that, can't imagine knee pads would be particularly comfortable nor aerodynamic.
I can't add to what everyone else has said, superb photo and the post procesing only makes it better. I just love the expression on the guys face:)
