View Full Version : The moon tonight...
Really sweet looking waxing crescent moon up there tonight - the sky the clearest its been... probably since last year! Hooked up the shot with Sigma 70-300mm & Canon 400D on tripod from bathroom window (my head squashed against the boiler). f/8, 1/40, iso 100.
C&C please

I tried exactly the same shot tonight..
canon 350D, sigma 70-300mm DG lens... but nowhere near as clear as this!!!
please tell me how you set up.. whats the best way to focus? I used Af.. then when it focussed i switched to manual focus and left it there.
but it seemed blurry still.
Fantastic shot mate.

additional note lol:
i did shoot before it was dark but the moon was out.. does that make a difference? and did u use mirror lock up to reduce shake? (something I dont know how to do)

I think first off you need to have a faster shutter speed. I would suggest 1/125 at least. Its amazing that even at 1/40 you can see a slight blur., most likley from movement

OK, I'm going to have to google what mirror lock up is
No, seriously - I have no idea. I used manual focus as the AF was not getting a precise enough lock (I guess because the subject is 230 000 miles away)
Thanks for your comments, though with a zoom lens, it's not too difficult - keeping the damn camera still is the key! Oh, that and unsharp mask!

Yeah, I tried it at 1/100 but couldn't drop the ISO down passed 100, so it was too bright and lost details.
That was the stillest shot I could get. Damn Earth-rotational movement

Given the limitations of light/lens and head against boiler :)
You have done well, I've seen a lot dodgier moons taken with better equipment.
Nice capture there.
I always remeber, many years ago, a question in a Photo mag asking what flash settings to use to take pictures of the moon :shake:

Yes, using the right flash can change a waxing crescent moon into a full moon. But that would mean power-outtage of the entire planet for one exposure. Better make sure you have your set up correct. :exit:
Another shot - but a day later...

Have you thought about hooking into a small telescope ?

Absolutely, though I don't have one at the moment. I have a whole list of photographic equipment I want to buy, with the telescope I want to buy (http://www.firstlightoptics.com/proddetail.php?prod=200heq5) right at the end. I also want to get some planets and DSO's.
