OK. You can see the effects of ADHD HDR with the halos and whatnot. Wating for Pretty Polly to produce the non hdr versions..............

I knew the cooked one was going to be a mess, its very dramatic but the plane is very obviously shining above and the clouds are crazy...trying to do the others as quickly as poss. Im slow though!! :D

Have added number 2 (less cooked HDR), only the NON HDR to add now.

i still like the mega hdr. despite the halos... better without the halos of course but the tonal range is fantastic!

I think I can bring some of that back with a contrast boost to number 2 though. Will try! :)

All added and no more PP being done. I can't decide betweeb NON HDR and HDR + Contrast Boost.
I know its not the best photo but I thought it was a good one for doing this test, it has lots of sky, lots of ground, and some trees and objects etc.
Gary.
hopefully improved slightly, spent whole 5 mins in lightroom.

Thank you!! Which one did you edit and what did you do :D
i edited the 'no HDR' one. boosted the over all saturation by 7%, increased britghness & contrast. extra saturated greens & blues think 5-10% slightly increased black about 2%. basically it, could be slightly off on % it was late wasnt paying to much attention.
that is a nice photo
what lens did you use to take that and where abouts did you go to at the Gyle to get it?

LOL - nowhere near the gyle!! If you go to the end of Turnhouse Road, and turn right at the end, you will eventually (300 yards maybe?) come to a point where a rail track is underneath to your left. If you look to the end of the rail track, you will see the forth bridge. ANd if you look to your left when facing the forth bridge, you will see the Airport and its runway.
50mm 5 or 6 shots stiched, f1.8 - I LOVE my 50mm so much.
Map onway.

Quite a nice panorama.
I thought I might add some of my own spice.

Thanking you!! What did you do? :)
nice one
I know exactly where you are now.
its nice down tehre
I usually go down there with a bag of chips that I bought from teh BBQ chippy :)
nice work
My pleasure :)
I did a couple of things.
1. duplicated the original layer three times and made the original invisible
2. on the top layer, I put a layer mask with a grayscale copy of the image in it and set this layer to multiply. I also painted the layer mask part over the jet with a fuzzy white brush
3. set the middle visible layer to screen, put a white layer mask and drawn a gradient from black to white on the mask, so the grass would be lightened
4. used levels on the middle visible image under the layer mask (not in it), setting the black point as the darkest part of the image and increasing gamma to 2 or so
If what I wrote above doesn't make much sense, I can make a video of the process (without voice, as my mic doesn't really work well).

I have had another go at this shot, changed the crop. Still to think about colours etc.

You're welcome :)
Was the video of any help?
The crop's is pretty good, I think I actually prefer it to the original for some reason.

Video is not playing, I think I need a codec of some sort. Investigating!!
The crop is better I think due to fact that instead of a massive landscape and tiny plane and train, the focus is now more on the transport as opposed to scenery?
or am I talking pish :)
I like the original shot better than the later crop I think. Not keen on the mega-cooked version though - I think there are subjects that suit "Serious HDR" and there are shots that don't. Slapo's version works well.
It's xvid, a free coded.
I suggest grabbing the VLC Media Player (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) - plays almost everything without having to install additional codecs (they come with it), it's fairly lightweight and free too.
Yeah, I think it's the change in composition and the different focus on subjects it brings that makes it look better for me.

Thanks Slapo. installing VLC...
New PC - I normally install the K-lite Codec pack but reluctant this time.

Thats a cool edit Slapo, most of I don't quite understand but will study it in detail going forward, thanks for taking the time to do that!!
No problem :)
It's a bit faster than the process actually was, some frames were skipped to keep the file size decent. Sorry about that.
The operations I did should be doable in most decent image editors, although some filters could have slightly different names.
Btw., CODEC PACKS ARE EVIL! Some of them make so many registry entries that it can even slow down Windows XP.
