Has anyone done this?
Is it worth it?
Thinking of the upgrade myself or should I save up and go for a D3? The only lens that i`ll have to sell is the 17-55 DX.
I`m happy with the D200,is the high ISO performance of the D300 really worth the upgrade?
Many thanks in advance.

Seems pointless to me. If I upgrade, I want to "feel" the upgrade, Full Frame Sensor and shooting low noise at ISO6400 - thats a real upgrade :)
I dont think it will be long before the D3 is around £2K from a good dealer!? Or am I dreaming! ???
Gary.
Well some online stores have now got the D3 below the £3k mark I notice.

£2K is the magic number for me. Will need my bonus first of course!
i think that waiting for the D3 is the best option. Then you can sell me your 17-55 ;)

If you wait until the D4 comes out then the D3 will be down to about £800! ;)
Earlier adopters obviously pay more for high end kit but they also get longer use out of it before it is obsolete.

Why not wait even longer, save up for a Bladd...
Seriously though, where do you draw the line?
Anybody that doesn't think a D300 is a sufficient improvement over D200 to bother with an upgrade, must be mad.
The D300 is a huge advance in every single facet, lower iso noise performance is only one, I cant think of anything other than ergonmics that the D200 is equal to.
Infact I cant think of another camera, besides the D3 and the top 1D's
On the other hand, if you actually want a D3, thats another comparison.
I think the D300 is worth the upgrade over the D200 - it's next on my list. :)

Because I don`t want one nor can I afford one.....:D

That is why i`m asking for the thoughts of anyone who has actually done this upgrade,i`ve read the reviews on the 300, but I prefer the views of people who have upgraded from the 200 to the 300 in real life.......
The D300 is definitely worth upgrading to from the D200, whilst the D200 is a great, solid, workhorse of a camera the D300 is big step up - the new AF system is fantastic, noise handling is very good in tricky lighting situations and the larger, clearer LCD is a godsend.
However, I did notice in your OP that you asked if it was worth waiting to save up for the D3. If you can justify the extra cost for the type of shooting you do I would say yes! I got mine a couple of days ago and it is an amazing bit of kit, I've got my first wedding with it today and will be putting it through its paces alonside the D300.
Hope this helps!

Agree wholeheartedly. I went straight from a D200 to a D3 a couple of months ago and it felt more like a quantum leap than just an 'upgrade'. I do enough paid work photographing property interiors (FX = vastly improved ultra wide angle) to justify it but think that anyone who can stretch to it won't be disappointed.

I guess i`m just indecisive and am bandying my thoughts about.
What do I photograph? Wildlife and landscape mainly, occasional motorsport and family get togethers.I`m not a pro and have no intention of becoming one...(probably due to to a lack of ability.....)...which is and has dissuaded me,sometimes, from spending 3 grand on the D3.The 300 however is well within budget..............hmmmmm......arghhhhh.......:sh rug:
I used to be indecisive bit now i`m just ........
Thats what I'm saying, the D300 is a quantum leap, its much more than an upgrade.
D70 to D80 was an upgrade.
What we doing ?, measuring degrees of quantum leaps or what:lol:.
The bottom line is, is the D3 worth the 3 grand to YOU?

I also recently changed from the D200 to the D300 and althoiugh I have not had enough time to use it, I have no regrets. I have never seen one bad report on the D300 in fact is has been quoted as being a better bet than some of the dearer Nikons. I was never too happy with the D200 and in some respects I found the D70 a better camera.
It boils down to personal preference and satisfaction with the end result
