I have a Nikon 70-300m VR lens and I have a unbranded 2xTC that doesn't seem to work with it, would the Nikon 2xTC be any good for the VR lens??

would like to get that little bit closer to a subject (ie birds etc) without scaring them to much.

Is the TC a cheaper option rather than trying to find a 400-500m lens??

Thanks

Bit of stuff here (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=55484) on Nikon TCs.....

Cool thanks for that, so from reading that I am guessing my zoom VR lens should still have autofocus.

Actually, sorry to say but I don't think the 70-300 VR is compatible with any of the Nikon teleconverters TC! Your safest bet is to check the manual that came with your lens, it should state what, if any, TCs your lens would work with.

Another thing to keep in mind, while Nikon TCs may work with some lenses, it may reder some of the lenses features redundant ... by this I mean, Nikon TCs may work with some lenses but you lose auto focus, or VR, or both!

Whichever way you go, do make VERY sure that your lens is compatible with the TC you plan to use, since you may cause serious damage to your lens, TC and camera. There are instances where the lens's rear-element may get pushed back so far that it gets into contact with the front element of the TC causing a lot of damage. This grinding is not good for any of the camera, TC or lens.

The Nikon TC 20E II retains AF and VR on my 70-200, but you need to check whether it will on others :)

Ring Nikon, they'll tell you :)

EdinburghGary,

Thanks for the heads up on this .... I would like to know, if you don't mind, for how long have you been using this set-up, and have you ever encountered any "funny" noise while using this particular TC with this specific lens?

Also, when you say "works", do you mean it fits, VR working, and autofocus too? Or do you lose one, or more, of these functions?

mattyh,

How would you rate the quality of the pictures with the TC 20E II? Have you tried this TC with any other lens?

As far as I can tell it all works with no side effects. I will do some testing tomorrow for you!!

Seems fine to me so far.. haven't really had a chance to do a proper test yet, but it should get a workout over the weekend when I'm down in longleat :)

No I haven't tried it with any other lenses, not sure I will tbh, as I've got the 70-200, 24-70 10-20 and a nifty 50, so none of the others really need a TC :)

Longleat is great .... different from Chester zoo, but a whole lot of things to shoot there. Your TC will come in VERY handy over there. Would love to see some pictures with / without the 20 TC, as I am contemplating buying either this specific one, or the 1.7 version ... would much rather go with the 20 E II if image quality is acceptable.

About the 24-70, if that's the Nikon, then I would be careful about putting a TC on to it. If I am not mistaken, it is not compatible with any TC .. and that's one expensive lens.

mattyh,

WoW ... great shots. Thanks for taking the effort and doing this ... Taking into account what I've read about the 2x converters and how they cause quality to degrade, I have to say that you sure managed to get some really great shots with that set-up.

Again, thank you for posting these.

I can see a little bit of degradation, but not enough to stop me using one, even if I have to open the lens up a stop, it'll still be worth it. I can still shoot at stupidly low speeds because of the VR

This is the Sigma TC coupled with the Nikon 70-200VR, am I correct?

Have you tried this TC with any of the other lenses you have? I know that the Nikon TCs don't work with the Nikon 24-70 ... do you know if the Sigma does work with this lens? Please don't go testing this just for me asking this question, I don't want you to push the limits on this, especially with such a wonderful - and expensive - lens like that .. but if you have input on this I would appreciate it.
