tif vs jpeg for storage of images?

do you store your photos in tif format or jpeg format? and why?

Tif because its lossless so no degredation of the image when opened and resaved.

Yep that too, but I think of that as the negative and the tif as a print. Guess it eats up the storage space:lol:

i tend to store mine in the format they come off the camera in...which is mostly RAW.

I suppose it comes down to how much space you have to store your pictures in...RAW I think will take up the most room, then TIF and then JPEG :shrug:

that's probably no help, so I too will be waiting to see what other people say!

RAW for me too although I usually keep jpg files for a while. If I open images and work on them, I will save as a tif. If I convert from RAW, and don't do any more PP then I only save the RAW. Convert to jpg for printing and delete jpgs.

Raw - untouched. DNG for masters and then TIF for processed. Copies of all on external hard drive too.

Interesting question and wonder if I can add, does archiving the raw files with Winrar for example cause any loss/problems on reopening ?

I'm not familiar with saving using winrar. I'm not sure if RAR compression is lossless, if it isn't then there probably is some loss of information. Most RAW files are lossless compressed anyway. If you want to save a bit of space convert to dng. This seems to save some space. Apparently the main saving seems to be with the embedded jpeg in dng.

I used to keep the RAWs as well, but after a few years I realised that I had never once been back to a RAW, professionaly or personally. So I started deleting them after a six month delay, these days they go straight away.

WinRAR won't cause any problem's as long as you archive with no compression, or you archive with compression but make sure you store recovery records with them too (Theres an option in WinRAR).

I would generally not bother with compression and just use WinRAR in archive mode, which uses no compression. I'd hate to find a huge rar file had become corrupted causing me to loose all the RAW's in it :eek:

Tiif uses more room than Raw. At least that is the case with my Nikon's Raw (Nef)

Just a point of interest, a couple of years ago a few top Australian wedding photographers and print labs got together to run a blind test on the merits of TIF vs JPG.

The same images were printed at various sizes up to 30x20 from TIFs, JPGs (lvl 12), JPGs (lvl 10), and lvl 10 JPGS that had been saved 10 times. The photographers and lab techs examined all the prints without knowing what format they had been saved in.

They unanimously decided that it was impossible to tell the difference at any print size between any of the prints - except for the multiple save JPG, and then it was marginal.

After that they all decided to save their images as lvl 10 JPGs, and after reading the report so did I.

photoshop saves all edits in a version set anyway, so I just use jpg.

And my laptop is backed up by Windows Home Server every day :)

Photos edited in the GIMP in tiff or png or in the GIMP's native format xcf.
Smaller versions for the web in jpeg.
