Took these 2 the first day I got my Canon 70 - 200 L F4.0 lens.
To compare the quality of my Canon 55 - 200 Kit lens I took these pictures within 30 seconds of each other H/H from about 3 feet away -

Without cheating and checking out the picture properties which do you reckon was with the L lens?

Haven't tried the L for sports shots yet........but I think the kit lens will struggle at longer focal lengths......

I'd say shot two but you really shouldn't be able to tell the difference from a teeny jpeg on the web. :)

I'd say the the 2nd was the L

The fur on the puddytats cheek is sharper and more detailed and the bokeh is much smoother.

this assumes though that the subject and lighting didn't alter dramatically.

Id go for the 2nd being the L

:suspect: I can see a very slight difference betwen the pictures, but not enough obvious difference to even say you had not just used the same lens with a different camera setup!!

i went on the eyes tbh...the ones in the second look sharper and seem to have more detail in the...although this of course could be just a focusing issue.

(BTW...since the first post I've sneaked a look at the exif)

Exactly my thinking too - all I did was swap lenses immediately and used aperture priority of F4 on the L and F5.6 on the Kit............

The L lens is ................No 1 - maybe I need a bit more practice with it, but if I had taken these 2 shots before I bought, I may not have shelled out the extra dosh

I will reserve judgement until after I've been to my Bike race meeting next month and post some more comparisons - in the right forum section next time!!

Based on the 2nd lot of shots I'd say #2 is the L
