this little fellow was hauling his biscuits across the bay, and flew fairly close in front of where i was standing. buffleheads are small ducks, and very fast fliers, so catching them in flight is a challenge. to make matters worse, the light was horrid... a typical Washington spring day, overcast and dull... but i had enough light to freeze him in action, and still capture a hint of the iridescent color on his head... Canon 40D, 100-400L @ 400mm, 1/800 @ f/8...

Awesome shot, lovely.
Well done, getting a sharp photo of a bird in flight at 400mm is some challenge.

Cracking shot. Lovely and crisp.

thanks, everyone! this is one of my better in-flight photos of these little guys... they're a challenge to shoot, not only because of their speed, but also because in what most of us would consider "good" light, there's so much contrast between the white and black, that one or the other suffers. shooting in overcast light like this doesn't bring out the colors much, but it does preserve the highlights a lot better! ;)

Very nice in flight shot. I need to practise this a bit more before I can get them like that! Well done.

Excellent-a little noise in the wings-but no biggy, and I agree they are darned hard to capture in flight.
