these teals are among the smallest ducks, but their markings are lovely when the light is right. i caught this little male taking a break close to shore at the park near my home...
40D, 100-400L @ 220mm, 1/400 @ f/8...

I think a lower angle would have improved the shot

thanks! i definitely agree - a low angle helps any waterfowl shot like this - but where i was, there wasn't an opportunity to get lower...
Wonder if it was twitching its head as you took the shot? The eye does not look as sharp as the beak to me. Odd effect. might be my eyes of course.... too much computer time!
Good composition with the head and reed on thirds and space on the right to look into.
