I am in the process of formatting my laptop to proceed with a fresh install of everything but don't to lose anything in the favourites and links which I have been saving for a while.
I know there is a "links" file somewhere but unable to put my finger on it.
Any ideas?

Wow, this is terrific, wasn't expecting a reply after 1 am. TPF is great. :thumbs::thumbs::thumbs:
Thanks a ton buddy. :clap::clap:
Any idea where the links are stored [Links are usually on the right most corner of the browser]
No worries - it's fresh in the mind as I've just done the same thing :thumbs:

MozBackup (http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/) It allows you to backup and restore bookmarks, mail, contacts, history, extensions, cache etc. It's an easy way to do Firefox backup, Thunderbird backup ...
You can also use "Foxmarks", which is a Frefox "add on" that synchronises the favourites on multiple computers - great thing is that it keeps a record of them in cyberspace somewhere. You just have to log in and synchronise and it sorts it all for you.
Steve
Alternatively use delicious (http://del.icio.us/) which means you're bookmarks are accessible on any computer over the web ;)
