Well, ere we go again. This will close aprroximately 2 weeks from last sunday! Or maybe next wednesday. Who can say?

Should attract some heavy hitters this one. I would ask though that the photo's are taken for this assignment and not old ones you've dredged out of your portfolios cos ye cannae be assed!

Having said that though, new mono conversions of old shots are perfectly permissable.

It's all for your own good you know!

Well Bachs has set the standard for conversion then ;). Just a thought, do people think the theme is more biased to an actual shot in B&W, or a shot that is an interpretation of Mono :suspect1: ?

Gandhi

I guess it's down to your interpretation of mono........

The bullet train,

a unicycle,

Or just plain black and white. Up to you I guess dude!

Comments so far:

Bachs --- Like this a lot! V. simple and interesting! Although your front balls are blown on the LHS ;)

Kcat --- Really tranquil and a good mono conversion. However, I think the focus is on the trees seen under the bridge and I think it would look better with the bridge being sharp.

SW -- heh heh, cheeky chappy there! Lovely shot, all that needs to be said. :)

Sam.

Thanks Sam! :) She sure was enjoying that sun yesterday, right until a huge thunderstorm started! I would have probably liked to take a different (more scenic) photo but haven't been able to go anywhere interesting since I've started back at college! :( I like the other two shots so far, I can't wait to see the other entries.

I'll let you know once I've played with my new canon A610 :Ponders: Tis a tad intimidating with all the big SLR's taking shots lol plus I've not posted any pikkies at all yet so I'm being a scaredy cat :eek1: I'll give it a bash though even if I don't enter.

I'll sell you the copyright for a nominal fee, of course! :smilenod:

Some really nice pictures come in so far. I was trying to think of a picture that says 'mono' as apart from taking a picture and converting it. As it happens, the jug in my shot is virtually black anyway so no real de-saturation required. That pesky Canon does tend to make the snow blue though (maybe I should have set the white balance myself  )

Softwind What a great expression on the little chaps face, I love this shot, great lighting.

Boon The spire looks wierd on that church. I wonder if it's the camera telling lies cos it looks like it's going to fall down or was it built on a Friday afternoon?

Thanks Stevegreen! :) My Chihuahua seems to work really well in b&w shots.. doesn't help that she turns her head away from the camera just as I'm about to take the photo everytime though!

Boo, don't worry! Practically all of my photos are taken with a Casio Exilim, which I don't really think can be compared to Canon digital SLRs. But in my opinion, good talent will shine through, no matter what the camera model.. you should enter! :)

hi steve
apparently the spire was built quite normally, but because of the use of green timbers, or because of lack of bracing, it has twisted over the years. The spire itself weights 32 tons.

Is it just me or do others notice how great peoples shots look in Mono, vs overall level of shots in previous Comps/Themes ?. I'm sure the current shots before conversion, the colours would probably distract from the composition & details in the shots.

More Mono's I say ;)

Ok, attempting to continue my thoughts of the shots:

PeteMC:
Nice. I'm not sure it massively benifits from being mono but nicely done none the less.

Daveyuk:
Like this. Nicely composed, however it does seem to be ever so tight in the frame.

Stevegreen:
Nice and simple. Lovely. Reflection of the house and what looks like your garage doesn't help but great idea.

Fangman:
Heh heh, nice! Well captured.

Boon:
Weird photo! Really well processed though. Feels to me ever so slightly off level but that's probably the spire! lol

Glen:
Great photo, well processed. I think it'd take a bit of dodge and burn to bring out the brickwork though.

stevec:
I really like the simplicity of this. Needs some more processing in my eyes though to make it shine. Firstly the pillars aren't vertical, it needs some more contrast and probably levels and curves. Worth taking the time over and resubmitting mate.

Ally:
Well captured. Could do with a tighter crop (and straighten) which should help focus you on the subject rather than the door behind them.

Stepheno:
I like this. Quite calm. What's going on with the border in the top right hand edge?

Steve400:
Hmmm, not sure about this one. Something seems to have gone wrong in the conversion or processing. I think the levels are too close i.e. the greys are far too similar losing detail. Maybe have another attempt at processing?

MarkGray:
Lovely and very detailed. A little dark perhaps.

Just my opinions obviously. :)

Ah cripes!

KIM:
I like what you've attempted here, a portrait landscape IYKWIM! Its very pleasing but I feel that it could have been ever so slightly better. Compo-wise I think the large stone interferres with the background, a step or two to the left would have help balance it. PP -wise it's a little grainy (maybe intentional) and could do with some levels and curve to bring out the background detail.
But good none the less! :)

If some of you are wondering where this picture is, it's of Newstead Abbey. The reason I chose this pic from the others in the end is all that's left of the actual Abbey is one wall, on its own (mono) if you know what I mean.:Ponders:

No problem Steve. I think the photo could be fine its just something seems to have got messed up in the processing leaving you with an image that has no white or black in it, just middle greys.

Thanks Sammy appreciate comments, I'm happy with it now you can see the lichen on the rocks and also see the mist in the valley. Putting in more tones to the fells darkens the rocks at the foreground. I wanted to take the viewer through the tallest rock to the valley behind, and up helvelyn to the snow. :Ponders: I think.

Kelticman...your image is coming along great!

The real trick to successful monochrome conversions (to me at least) is selective contrast enhancement.

'One click' across the board solutions very rarely work successfully unless you get immaculate lighting at time of shooting.

Bring out the luminance in selected parts of a shot, especially landscapes and your'e onto a winner.

BTW... there's a great alternative to the traditional PS dodge and burn tools to bring out detail in the shadows.

Create a new layer above the image by holding down the ALT key then clicking the new layer icon on the layers palette.
This will open a layer dialogue box where you can select the blending mode. Set that to 'overlay' and tick the tickbox that then appears for 'fill with overlay-neatral colour (50% grey).
This will create a new layer filled with 50% grey in overlay mode.

Use a low opacity soft brush to paint on that layer...white will dodge or lift dark areas, black will burn or darken areas. if you make a mistake, create a 50% grey foreground colour by clicking on the foreground colour pallete and in the colour picker menu that appears and where it says H, S, B:
enter 50% in the 'B' section and paint away your mistakes to restore the image.

You will be amazed at how much detail it can lift from the darkest of shadows. If there's any detail there at all, this method will bring it out.

The shadow/highlight tool applies the effect across the entire image which is not always what you want and the traditional dodge and burn tools can look patchy and over-processed.

You may need to protect the areas around the detail you are bringing out by masking it with a selection.

Try it peeps...it's a great tool!
I'll be adding a video tutorial on this in the near future ;)

SammyC
07-03-2006, 08:53
It always god doing these thing via layers as it means you are not modifying the original image and therefore losing information.

Nice technique there Bachs, I shall give a whirl next time! :)

Your techie is full of it sadly. Japan's telecoms infrastructure (since we bombed the sh*t out of the major cities during the 2nd world war) is mostly fibre optics. We are stuck here with mainly copper wires (at best) and (at worst) really crappy aluminium and most of it is around 50 to 100 years old so in a bad state of repair. OK so we do have some fibre optic laid, but this is used by business customers who pay a fortune for between 2Mb to 1000Mb/sec links.

In my last job, I worked for an LEA reselling broadband to schools. Schools pay between £6000 per year for asymmetrical 2Mb link upto 30k+ for 100Mb asymmetric links. And those prices were very heavily subsidised by the government. The average cost to dig up the road and lay fibre from the nearest exchange to a school (normally less than 1 kilometre)??? - £82k

It's all very well having the exchanges upgraded, but until BT dig up all the streets and replace the crappy wires with lovely fibre then we aren't going to see speeds anywhere close to what the japanese get.

In central London where I live, the best I can get is 1Mb lol

http://www.vnunet.com/vnunet/news/2148449/asia-adopts-speed-fibre

Sorry for going off topic :whistling

SammyC

Yep, I think you have to live in an exchange to get these kinds of speeds.

lowly 2Mb here. And my leech of a flatmate normally sucks all that. Anyone got any ideas on how to limit his connection?

Yes, we did start this one a bit prematurely, but it should end this weekend, sunday pm to be a bit more precise. I think I'm gonna re-title it 'occasional assignment, as it's hard sticking to the fortnightly gig when you have to vote and do all the democratic BS with the next subject. lol. Unless someone has some suggestions? anybody? dust? dust? anybody? dust?

You are not the only one :innocent:

lowly 2Mb here. And my leech of a flatmate normally sucks all that. Anyone got any ideas on how to limit his connection?
If it's a Linksys router (WRT54g v.1-4 / WRT54g / WRT54L) you've got then you can using a 3rd party firmware and using QOS http://www.linksysinfo.org/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=31

or http://www.ezlan.net/monitor.html

or you can use http://www.netlimiter.com/

If it's your router you could also block P2P between certain hours

Otherwise you need to get all geeky and install a NAT box.

What sort of speeds do you get? On a 2Mb ADSL you will see (at best) approx 246kb/sec downloads...

I hate to be picky gents but can please try to keep threads remotely on topic? There has been a lot of off topic posts around the forums lately.

We have a section in the forums were questions on BB speeds and routers can be asked and answered.

Thanks.

So... what do we do now? Rip the **** out of everyone's pictures and vote who wins?
Apart from Mine, my short list goes in no particular order goes: CT, DJW, Keltic Ice Man; Steve.

Since this is a mono comp - do we crit the B&W processing as well as image content, composition etc? I think we should. Noticed a couple of 'old' images creeping in here as well - I do think peeps should try and post stuff we haven't seen before, even a shot from the same sequence would be better than one we've all seen before (ahem)...

I agree.
The post processing is an important part of monochrome, arguably more so than colour and can make or break a monochrome image.

This round ends tomorrow evening (Sunday) and a poll will be put up for people to vote on the entries. Once the result is in then feel free to critique the pics - that's the real value of these assignments - we'd like as many people as possible to write critiques, but please try to remember that some people are more used to critique of their pics than others, so keep it constructive and helpful, there's no need to dishearten people completely.

Re the off topic comments, we all do it from time to time, but Steve isn't willy waving for the sake of it, the mods get a lot of complaints about threads going OT and we're just trying to keep the board pleasant for everyone.... thanks! :)
