Getting in early with this one. There has been some talk of arranging a meet for this at other meets etc.
I have never been before, but it is supposed to be a good day out. Plenty of Plane shots available and plenty of people shots too.
Quite a few shots on Flickr to give you an idea - http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=Sunderland+air+show&ss=2&s=int
....and the official site (well page) http://www.sunderland-airshow.com/
*UPDATE* - Ok anyone planning on going on Sunday and want to meet up then the only really visable and easy to find spot is probably the lighthouse on the grass area in the middle of what I think will be the center of attention for the ground part of the airshow (if you know what I mean)
Where? The Lighthouse Thingy: (circled red)

and further out

Time: 11:30 - Think this might be a good time as I am guessing a crowd will start to gather near the waters edge pretty early on, so don't really want to be hanging around waiting to see if anyone is going to appear when possible shooting spots are vanishing :p
Take a look at Marcel's 365 if you want a face to look out for as he is coming and stands out in a crowd :p
I'm definitely coming, i've got it booked off at work and can make any / both days, i missed it last year.
I'll have my 100-400 for it too :D

I'll be going, not sure what day yet though. I'll be there with the family though so not sure if I'll be able meet up. I normally setup on the beach near the pier, its not a busy their and if the tide is out you can get fairly close. Being on the cliff top is better but its always jam packed.

bumpage as this is only 2 weeks away now.
 We are going to the air show. I voted Saturday, but meant to vote Sunday :$
We are also going o visit The Stadium of Light while there, and possibly the Angel of The North too (depending on time). Going to see if I can find my Grandads plaque at the Stadium.

Seems the red arrows are only there on the Sunday so it looks like the best day to go. Arranging a time and place if people want to meet up could be interesting as it could get uber busy and I am not sure how much access there is to certain areas.

Looking at previous shots on Flickr (I have never been to an air show before) it seems you can get good formation type shots at 200mm, but need about 400mm to get a full frame of a plane. I would take your 70-200 and your TC.
Think I might have to hire a 100-400 :D
Thanks for the advice Jimmy Im really looking forward to it.
i'll probs just go the sunday now then.
Is everyone still on for this? I can't wait :D

Trying to think of where might be a good place for those who want to meet up to meet :| I am guessing it is going to be VERY busy so it could be tricky. Anyone got any suggestions?
Id be up for meeting up, though I don't know the area, also Im a bit stuck for net access at the moment Im in the middle of changing ISP's from Cable to a BT line so no access at home for the time being, I will try and check at work to see what people are up to would be nice to meet up with some more enthusiasts as I dont really know anybody else who is into photograpy.
Cheers
Sean
i'll be with my son when i go but you'll see me with my talkphotography neckstrap and 100-400 stuck on :D, say hello if you see me (Sunday)

I'll be there on Sunday, probs be on the beach near to the pier, its not as busy down there. I'll also have my talkphotography neckstrap on and my have the tripod setup, the Mrs and the two kids will be close by also.
north or south pier? I'm travelling in car, where's easiest to park - i'll be coming in the morning so should be easier as flying doesn't start till 1pm?

North pier just near the entrance to Roker Park. I think I've still got your mobile number if you want me to give you a ring. I normally just park in one of the streets Roker Park Road, if your going there earlier you should be able to park easy enough.

Bugger, I have just been told by the person I was getting a lift off they are not going now as they have to go to Germany tomorrow for their work and wont be back until thursday/friday next week!!!
So I guess I wont be going. Have a good time all of you that are going.
Cheerz.

If you just give me the name of a street for an example i'll get tomtom to direct me to there, i'll probs be going about 10am to have a look around sunderland as i've never been there before lol.

If you search for Roker Park Road then its just look around the streets off there as its very busy for parking. Might not be the best day for touring Sunderland as some of the roads are closed due to the airshow and the rest can be very busy.

It gets very very very busy around that area, it is probably the best viewing area but I think people must camp out there just to get to the front. Where I normally stand isn't so busy plus theres toliets near by, having kids with you kind of sways it if you know what I mean.
Wile, what time are you getting there? You seem to know where to go so i may phone you and meet up at some point to get a decent place. I've changed my mobile number too so i'll pm you it, could you return the favour as i've not got your number now. (new phone etc).
If you see a guy with a camera, it might be me!
Will be there with GF and daughter, not sure where we'll stand, it's usually just somewhere on the cobbley bit with the masses. Was thinking might try viewing from the beach?

Good point, the only reason I went for the lighthouse was that is will be findable by anyone who wants to meet up, I did read somewhere else that it seems to be a reference point for the planes too and that a lot of action happends square onto it. But as you say best viewing spot is not always the best place to be :p don't really want to be in a crowd when I am gonna have two camera with long lenses on :(
Any chance of more info on where you normally stand? ;) it shounds good :p

Looks like I might get after all. Only ever been once and then I watched all the action from one of the appartments on the other side of the road.
Oh yeah that's dam handy I got mugged and was given that 100-400 last Friday as compensation!!!!!:D:D:D:D
Edit: Would a tripod or monopod be recomended, only asking as I have never attempted avaition photography before!!!
the IS should be fine o the 100-400 to negate the need for a tripod / monopod, also if it's decent weather you'll be using fast shutter speeds anyway, i'm not taking my tripod anyway.

Right guys I try to offer my best advice and no laughing at my crude photoshop work :p I'll probs be there around 12pm, the planes start flying at 1pm.
I've shown here where I normally stand for the airshow, I think the tide will be out so you'll be able to get on the beach. You can get there by walking through Roker Park the way I have noted.
http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/gallery/data/500/roker1.jpg
Here is a less zoomed in view showing where JL suggested as a meeting point and possible parking.
http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/gallery/data/500/roker2.jpg
If you have a look through my gallery on here there is 3 pics taken last year using 200mm for the helicopter and a 300mm lens for the Red Arrows so its still close enough.
I would try to avoid the A1231 into sunderland as it gets very busy at the traffic lights at the Queen Alexander Bridge and past the Stadium of Light, if you have a look on google maps you'll be able to see where I mean.

Yeah forgot to add about the tripod monopod, if its a bright sunny day it may not be much use. Infact sometimes more of a hinderance as the jets as you may guess can be really fast at times. If its a cloudy day and you haven't got IS or VR shooting can be tricky.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y45/jojo24/airshow.jpg
That's what we are doing. My friend Helen who is going with us, goes every year, and she says that is the best place for parking and watching, as it can get a bit too crowded elsewhere. She also said that all the planes fly past that bit, so you don't miss anything. We will be taking a picnic and everything, so we will be getting comfy
i'm still wondering wether it's a good or bad idea to take my 20 mth old son, i don't want to keep him in his buggy all day but i also want to take photos too which means keeping him in his buggy, but he'd love to see it all too, what to do what to do :S

The flight time is 1-5:30 so I am guessing there wont be stuff happening all the time, so you might get chance to photograph some of it then de-buggy your little one for some of it....no idea how loud it will be either, guessing not very.

Yeah theres 5-10mins or more breaks between the flights. Some of the jets can be very noisy at times, the eurofighter, tornando and the F16's are the worst. One year one the F16's was nearly at the sound barrier, you could hear the build up to the boom then he backed off, guess he didn't fancy all the grief he would have got, plus the repair bill for all the windows on the sea front.
Geordi69
25-07-2008, 21:42
The only time I was there, I saw the eurofighter, I could not believe how loud that was, espesh when he went into the vertical climb. That was a sight!!!
i've decided it be best to leave lil'un at home for tomorrow, what's it like in Sunderland atm, Redcar was really misty about an hour ago, not ideal for viewing an airshow lol. I hope it's not tlike that tomorrow.

So...
Sunday:
Mist or fog may linger near the east coast. Mostly dry again with some warm sunshine inland but with the risk some thundery showers developing again in the afternoon. Maximum temperature 24 °C.

Hope you guys have a great day :)
Well i got home for 6, what a disappointing day, mist was very bad on the coast which meant nothing could fly except a spitfire and hurricane which did a fly by which was pretty much invisible due to the mist / fog. Also an F-16 flew but again you could only hear it. Most of what was promised was cancelled (red arrows, chinook, Typhoon, etc etc). The best bit was the role play thing they did on the beach where the Royal marines rescue hostages from a hostile force in a realistic operation, there were some good explosions. Marcel etc have all gone to Penshaw monument from there so i wouldn't expect them home anytime soon LOL.
I take it the Red Arrows didn't bother showing in the end? We left about 4.30 to get the Park N Ride. Very disappointing display wise, though completely unavoidable. Even more disappointing as 2 minutes walk inland it was clear as could be with no mist problems.
Did anyone take any pics?
We didn't even see the explosions! The beach assault thing seemed to be a bit crap, so after the few bits of gunfire we went to one of the main fields. I'm hoping I might have a misty atmospheric 'soldier' with reflection shot... but not much else. I tried some candids too, but not holding out much hope as never tried this before. Will download pics shortly.
What time were the Red Arrows due? They flew north over Scunthorpe at 3pm maybe on their way to Sunderland.
Red Arrows were due to close the show 5.30pm end.
red arrows were due at swanage today too, but they were cancelled at sunderland.

I left at 1.20pm, heard the first jet never managed to see it and though better of it. I took the kids to Herrington Park which is next to Penshaw monument, really sunny and blue skies there.

Just got in and am now downloading photos, still managed to take far too many! Seeing the weather just in land a bit I think if that fog hadn't been around then it would have been the perfect weather :( ah well, we did Penshaw and Angle of the North to make sure we got some shots of something :p
angle of the north? We've got an angel of the north up here mate :D
Jimmy_Lemon
27-07-2008, 22:05
wait till Marcel tells you about the variety of angles he took shots of it from though Wez :p it is an exciting story, with a gripping slide show.

27-07-2008, 22:05
we had the reds at Swanage, and they announced that they were to refuel at Bournemouth then fly to Newcastle to close a show... That was at 12.30
Well they didn't :p They sat in the airport, sipping tea instead.
Was a good day anyway, meeting up with everyone, shame only three planes flew....and we only managed to see two of em :p
Just downloading my shots now, although I'm not going to go through them until tomorrow
With my 5 and a bit hours sleep last night, and all that sunshine today, I've *just* got in about 15 minutes ago, I'm as red as a beetroot, I have a thumping headache, I feel sick, I'm sunburnt, and my face is soooo hot :p
And I'm knackered.
Great to see you all  and wez, that lad of yours is a cutie :p
And damn, I use too many smileys.
Geordi69
28-07-2008, 07:15
It was good meeting you all.
Shame about the fog. I copped one or two of the explosions and of some of the marines on the beach assault, now just have to get rid of the bloody fog in photos as well!!!
i know he is Marcel, he's a right little star :D
Give it another year, he'll be a monstar :D
I'm sorry I couldn't make this in the end. Only it was too hot here to leave the dog couped up alone all day and night. So we opted to go to my mums instead. Looks like it may have been a wise choice given the weather you all had  There's always next year ;) Still, it's a shame I didn't get to meet you all :( That's twice now that I have missed out on meeting a lot of you!
