View Full Version : Soho & Chinatown - Street photography
After the relative success of last Saturday early evening's street photography, I decided to venture out once again, but this time under the darkness of night. Soho and Chinatown beckoned - night creatures was what I was looking for...
C&C please! There's quite a few photos this time, so I'll put them up in a couple of parts.
Numbers skipping due to removing some - all changed from original to B&W...

EDIT: Originals removed - changed to B&W as per above..
You know, some might say photo x isn't sharp, and you've cut off subject y's head or the background in shot z is too busy, but I say you've really caught some characters. And that's what street photography's all about, right? Favourite is probably the nail-biting person. Great capture, that!

You are braver than me, I dont think I'd risk my gear at the mercy of beer swilling louts. I'd much rather be one of them :bonk:
Great shots though
Like #1 for the contrast between the couple arm in arm vs the girl on her own looking less than happy. #5 made me look twice, the others don't really do much for me I'm afraid. So definitely #1 from this bunch.

there is a freaky random finger in #9 btw

Yes, I like the first one for that reason. Thanks for your honesty about the others.
BTW - the best ones have yet to come.... ;)
Is it just me or are they all really under-exposed, and not in a motionid way that works?

f/4......... :'(
I need a nifty fifty.
Great shots, I love number 7 :D

Yeah but post processing? Did you shoot RAW? Did you try and up the ISO?

I like no 7 for the colours, lighting and perspective. Like no 13 for the honesty and candidness of the shot

Yes, shot this in RAW and tried increasing the exposure in PP, but in some cases too much increase resulted in a grain fest. I had the ISO set at 800 most of the time, shutter at around 1/40 - 1/100 in Tv (shutter priority mode). IS was on and I was using AI Servo in 95% of shots to get the AF right... but didn't always work. It's a great lens, but when it gets too dark, it starts getting funky...
Backup there. Tv? In gods name why? That meant that your camera had control over the depth of field, the aperture. That's crazy. Unless you're shooting sports there's generally no need to ever use Tv. Keep it in Av and keep an eye on the shutter speed. If need be set it to manual. Have you tried upping the exposure in RAW +2 and converting them to b&w? You can get away with more then, not that I'm saying you should use b&w for that reason.
Interesting. I started off in manual (setting everything myself), but I started finding the AF hunting during critical shots, and ended up loosing a lot of really good ones. I then went to MF, but it was a real PITA to get the focus right when I could hardly see what I was doing. Next option was to set it on Tv... Lesson learned... I didn't try Av. Thanks for the pointer.

...wait. I just realized what you meant. I think I really did F-up. :(
I let the damn camera choose my aperture - I am an idiot!
Indeed :p I didn't mean manual focus, I meant manual settings so you could set the aperture and shutter speed yourself. I say go back to RAW, push them up by 2 stops and convert to black and white using the red channel.
Going back through the metadata, it looks like the camera chose f/4 for all the shots anyway... I still think a lens with a lower aperture would have worked a treat.
When you say 'push them up by 2 stops', which setting is this under RAW adjustments? I'm using Apple Aperture 2, but can also use CS3.
Right, tried petemc's approach by increasing exposure and converting to B&W. More pics to follow... (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=58670)
Definitely an improvement. But it shows up the issues with them more now. Focus issues, and such.
B&W works better in some than others. You don't need me to tell you which, but my favourite now is 19.
14, for example, looks too modern to 'work' in mono (for me), but that was one of my favs in colour :)

Always love SP. I can tell these were shot at high ISO, but it works well with b/w. I like the grain.
My favourite is the boy biting his nail. Good shot!
