I want to create some banners like THIS (http://www.tdc.govt.nz/pics/1318-tasman-montage-banner-500px.jpg) for my website. How do I go about it please?

Easy!
You place the photos overlapping, add a layer mask, and use the gradient tool (from black to white) on the mask to give a fading effect.
