View Full Version : What would you name this
I took this photo the other day, it’s the first time I have seen one of these and I thought to myself it has got to be called a blue billed duck.
But no its called a white headed duck, I know it has a white head but I think its blue bill is by far its most distinguishing feature, so why white headed duck:thinking:

i have no idea about the naming of ducks. Is a well caught photo though.

Perhaps the "namer" was being ironic ;) or maybe they just had NO imagination :) nice shot though, where was it taken?

Thats a White headed duck.
Unusual looking duck. Nice and sharp
Only one I've ever seen with a blue bill before was a Ruddy Duck.
Try covering up it's head so you only see the blue - it could be called a two headed duck with that beak. :-)

Is that not a Ruddy duck?
oxyura jamaicensis. They are increasing in numbers throughout the uk after escaping from collections.

Other blue billed ducks include Peruvian Duck, North American Ruddy's, Masked duck, Argentine duck, Austalian Blue billed duck. That I believe is a White headed or Stifftail duck.

It's got a large kneb on the bill, different bill to the Ruddy duck.
