Well, you've got the shot but not the sharpness with the 70-200... looking at the EXIF's I can see you were in aperture priority, which can work... but even at 1/400 to 1/800 you've still got the wobbles somehow. At that kinda shutter speed you should get pretty sharp images, but for some reason you haven't... are these the sharpest from the set?
Bear in mind at 1/800 the wheels will be frozen (or at least at slow speeds, ie round corners - or straights maybe not) and it will loose a lot of the sense of speed.
Your kit is good enough for the job, so it should work, just practice your panning and if you have it, turn IS on in mode 2 - it might help you.
Also, use shutter priority, so you can control the shot in terms of motion blur vs hit rate :D

They do look a little soft. It was rather busy, wasnt it!?!?! That Kawasaki would have been a good shot, if it was sharp.
desantnik's pretty much covered it.
all been said ..
but looks like you had fun and thats the main thing...
they will only get better if you listen to advise off members on here..

Pete, had a little play with a couple of them as I thought there was possibly more potential in them with a little processing, hope you don't mind?

Just lighted up a little to recover some lost detail and carried out some sharpening, might of overdone it on the first image.
Thanks very much guys :)
We did have a brilliant time , just watched it again on the telly recorded from channel 4.
Thay are my best shots, I did take loads. I think I need to practise panning and may have missed the focus, I mainly do wildlife stuff not used to moving subjects :D
Thanks Andy for reediting :) The kawasaki shot looks much better, I will reproccess them in CS2.
I learnt a lot, I think next time I will start at a slower part of the track to make it easier. I will use shutter priority next time too.
Thanks for the help :)
Lorraine my her half took some shots too, I will put them up in a bit under my username

Yeap been covered, Tv is by far the best option if you'r not confident togo all the way with the exposure in manual. Personal i prefer manual gives me far more control over the final image, but get it wrong and your kinda stuffed. I very rarely shoot over 1/250, but most of time i am down at 1/160 or 1/200, the faster shutters for head on. For pans its unknow togo down to 1/30, depends on the speed of the bike.
Not bad for a first try, i am thinking of upgrading to a 40d from my current 30d as its getting a tad long in the tooth now.

Oh and I meant to say - use only one focus point, probably the centre one unless you are using a 1D series. A single focus point focuses far faster than multiple ones.

Agree with single point. But why just the center on the 40D? it has 9 cross type af points upto f5.6 so in theory they should all be as quick wouldnt they?
I get away with using of center af points on both primes on the 30d, not really tried with the 70-200 ***.

Dunno about the 40D really, never had one to play with... maybe it works, maybe it doesn't... only ever seen off centre focusing work properly on the 1DMkIIN and sort of on the IIIN ;-)
