View Full Version : RAF Typhoon & FAF Alphajets low level

Following on from my day at RAF Waddington I headed over to Wales to see if the RAF wanted to come out to play.
The weather wasn't as good as you would have thought. The sun and blue skies were great but there was a haze that refused to lift all day (you can see it clearly in the Alphajet and Hawks photos). If it wasn't a French Alphajet I would have junked the photos.
Movements were even worse with only two Alphajets, two Hawks and a Typhoon all day.

By the afternoon the light had improved and I had two passes by this Typhoon but missed the first as I was applying sun screen!!
The second pass was lower than expected and without the experience of the first pass I only caught the approach and then found myself too close with my 300 prime so I went for a cockpit shot instead.

I know, what a waste of a seat! :'(

Having the right kit does help you out and once you've been a few times you start to learn what works and what doesn't.
It's very different from most types of photography as you have to pull it all togeather in a very small space of time. That is one of the things I really like about it.
Very Impressive - Very Hard to shoot I know.

:)Great shots Gordon all of them
Fantastic shots.
The first typhoon shot is my favourite. Although you say you only caught the approach, I think it adds some drama to the shot rather than the virtual top-down view.
Great stuff.

Agreed its brilliant and the fact the back seater isnt present, for me, illuminates the shot

That first Typhoon shot is a stunner ,one to be very proud of for dramatism and clarity.
All the rest are excellent.Well done.

:thumbs:The Typhoon shots are 'Top Notch' Gord......especially through CadWest....the 300mm prime certainly cature some superb detail.....The cockpit shots make a nice variation to a Low level Image and the one you have of the Typhoon is terrific.......Cheers Barry

Thanks everyone.
Cheers Bazza. That was my first proper low level Typhoon. I've been teased by a few that have skimmed the tops of the pass but this guy was well and truely in it.

Great shots Gord.....I've still got to bag a decent shot of a Typhoon, see them on a couple of occasions in the loop, but weather has let me down each time.....
