Hi, well I've finally thought it's about time for me to join a UK based forum. Have had a D40X for nearly a year now and not using the manual settings and really would like to get to grips with using the camera properly.

Try Aperture priority as a first step. Take the same picture (say a person with landscape behind them) at all the different aperture settings then compare the results - then you will start to see how choosing your own settings can get you a better picture than 'auto'
