I bowled into London last night and, predictably, had my gear with me :)

Some crafty tube shots, I hope you like 'em :):

Love the whole feel of number 6...the noise really adds to it...

Think its a great shot.

Like the rest as well....

But were you not a little wary of getting battered?

Thanks Superstat and Mark - I have a few more that I might post later and no, I never fear a battering :D Way too careful for that :D

Number 3 for me, John. But I like them all.

You're getting very brave! Thats why I like the countryside, you dont have to ask the wildlife... or if you get caught they cant thump you!!!

Great shots, Dark Star. Love the lighting - so bright and neon. Great characters on the tube, though definitely not a place you want to get caught taking pictures of someone who decides they don't like you. Nowhere to run to, baby, nowhere to hide....

I've done it before on the tube, but it was of a sleeping guy :)

If you'd have gotten on the Bakerloo line at around 10, you would possibly have seen me on the tube, with my trousers round my arse, and my brightly coloured boxers hanging out, on the way back from a gig :p

I like these shots, I like the noise in the candids, too.
Have #2 and #3 been given a tone mapping treatment? Look kinda flat to me.

Dark Star

Thanks chaps

fp - the first 3 are all HDR and have been tone mapped as part of that process

Like these!

Is that your reflection in number 2? You shooting from the lap?!

What gear did you use for these? I assume no flash, so a pretty fast lens?

Dark Star
13-05-2008, 10:03
Thanks Donna, Katy, Wull and Weggy - yep that is me in the 2nd shot and yep lap shots! a) for steadiness (HDRs are all 3 shot jobbies) and b) surreptiousness (if thats a word! :D)

And its my 40D with the Sigma 10-20 mm in all cases

Number one is my favourite tbh, very simple and effective. Like the way "Mind the gap" sits down on the right.

Mac!!! Nooo not me :D

Thanks Barbara, its simple - its the 40D + 10-20mm resting on my lap in plain site for the carriage shots or by my side for the walking shots, aim, fire, chimp, aim and fire again and so on. I also make sure the shutter sound is covered by the train noise or a cough if its quiet and bingo.

Great fun and not been attacked yet! I have a few more that I might post :D

But how do you know what you are taking when you can't see through the viewfinder. Do you just take lots and hope they will be OK. What mode do you use. When I've tried to take shots of characters that I think might not like it, I get hubby to stand in the picture and then pretend I'm focusing on him. Downside is many blurry pics of hubby.

Look forward to seeing more shots.

The 10-20mm is so wide I know if I aim I'll capture (more or less) what I want but it may take a couple of shots (hence the chimping :)) to get it just so. All in AV mode and these with high ISOs - 1000 or so

The walking ones are less planned - I circled the couple and took about a dozen shots of which half or so are workable. The B&W was one attempt.

The two lads: 6 shots and maybe 2 or 3 just right.

So an element of luck plus some judgment - kinda works ;)
