View Full Version : Coffee, Tomato and Garlic
I know the title is a strange combination
I set myself a photo project and chose Anything Edible. These are a few of my favourites.
I was happy with the coffee shot because it was the first time I'd managed to photograph steam with any effect.
CC appreciated.
TIA

They are really simple and nice. What did you sit them on to take them?

Yeah the actual "coffee" is out of focus i think....:suspect:
The other 2 are nice though ;)

I find the coffee shot very effective still, I noticed it was OOF but still, it has a great initial impact.
The coffee could be sharper and I've seen the like before. The garlic is top thingy '***
:agree: with the above but still think they are a good set.
Interested to know the set up if you don't mind sharing?

My coffee machine is now bubbling away and I'm eagerly awaiting a cup!
Really nice work!
Very nice and welcome to TP.
Thanks for the comments and the welcome :)
My basic 'it's nowhere near professional, but it works for me set up' is as follows.
I take most of my food shots on my dining room table. If possible I will take them in the kitchen using natural light from the window.
1 piece of board. I use the back of a large 'clip' photo frame. I use this for the backdrop to drape the cloth over.
1 piece of black cloth, or a white shower curtain, depending on what colour background I want. Of course, you could use any colour or background you want.
3 desk lamps. These cost me £2.98 each from Asda. You can get them anywhere.
3x 100 watt daylight bulbs. Bought from ebay for £4.00 for a set of three. These have a slight blue tinge to them so that you don't get the orangy/yellow glow that you normally get from a spotlight bulb.
Various plates in different colours. I try to choose the best colour plate to show off the food I'm photographing.
If I want to photograph food and have a reflection, I use the front plastic from the clip photo frame. I put the (usually black) cloth underneath the plastic to get the reflection. I've found that the reflection is much softer with this method rather than have a very prominent reflection from a mirror. This is just my personal preference though, and there's nothing to say you can't use a mirror. If you do use a mirror, watch for the reflections from the lamps.
This is a pic of my basic set up, although I've got a black reflective plate rather than the clip frame for this one. Below is the picture I took of the cheesecake on the black plate.

I really like these. :) Very professional looking. Would not look out of place in a good cook book at all. Shows what you can do with a cheapo simple set up doesn't it.

Cracking shots, I should really give myself a project. I'm struggling with enthusiasm at the mo. Really well done.

Ohhh man your cheesecake shot has me starving.....wow.
Nice setup!
Have you tried making some softboxes for the lamps to help diffuse the light a touch?
Cheers

Hmmmmm, cheesecake. Perhaps a bit soft though. And I'm talking about the biscuit base, not criticising your photo :D

:love:wow, that cheesecake would go really well with my coffee (sigh)
Those shots are brilliant. Given me some ideas for photos for my kitchen now!!
Thanks for sharing your setup too......... very kind.
Dont suppose you could tell me what font you used for the title of each photo on the borders.. it looks great :nono:
I think you should do this professionally.
A local man in my village has just had his food pics published in Hello mag.

All look pretty good, especially for such a simple set up. Garlic would probably be my fave, though have you pushed the saturation a lot on it? Red's in particular look a little funny.
Excellent shots.
You use a Blue Peter set up too. :D
3x 100 watt daylight bulbs. Bought from ebay for £4.00 for a set of three
Thanks for that!
I use them sometimes, never thought about getting them off Ebay, they are expensive in the craft shops. Just ordered some. :)
the cheesecake looks terrific
and thanks for the lighting set up
great results for such simple equipment
that is really inspiring :D
I have 2 halogen lamps i got from ikea for a couple of quid each, i may have to go the daylight bulb route though.
The cheesecake shot is really good.

I am really impressed with the results you got from the kit you were using.
I might have to have a go now. Can't do cheese cake, it would never make it to the plate!!!
Those are crackin' shots! Would be perfect as part of a supermarket advertisement.
If you ever want to do another tomato related shot, I could provide you with a nice beef tomato.
Well, I do work in a tomato greenhouse, and here's one of the many beef tomatoes we are currently growing (note the ordinary loose tomato and cherry one below for comparison)

However, I don't like tomatoes. :gag: :cuckoo:
