Really not enjoying the results of this lens, clearly user error, but I must learn how to avoid soft images...

Anyhoo, C&C welcome as always. Look at both the soft spots on the "solo tree" shots too, I don't get it

1 (Has a soft area, blurry almost, left of center - see larger)

2 (too soft)

3 (I know too much saturation / contrast?)

4 (This is very soft)

oh, and my sensor clean is now long overdue. What a state on the higher F numbers...

I like the third one, and maybe it's the lens... though I haven't read about any bad copies yet. Maybe it's your eyesight :P

I don't think the blurry patch is down to the lens. It looks to me like you have an enormous lump of crud on your sensor and if you're using wide apertures and the lump is large eough it'll do that to your pics. You said youself the sensor was mucky.

They all look oversharpened to me with halos around contrasty areas. No2 & 4 are difficult to really analyse at this resolution, perhaps you focussed on a cloud:shrug:

Thanks guys,

I swear if there was area that I would love to improve on, it would be soft shots. Not brave enough to do sensor cleaning myself so will try and get it done in the morning.

So in landscape the lens is blurry above or below centre?
Ive heard right and left but not top to bottom

What F stop and ISO are you using on these shots?

Hi Mate,

I just feel its overly soft. I used F8 mostly, and the ISO ranging from 100 to 400 mostly. I very rarely ***'t higher than F8, maybe I need to be open a bit wider? <<<<<edit: confused, wider is higher or lower number?

auto focus?
whats soft?
What did you want in focus?
why focus on a subject in full shadow? although i guess it wasnt only for the exposure

EdinburghGary

I wanted the whole scene to be in focus, i presumed if I focused in the distance the shadowed gate edge would be soft...man it's confusing :D

number 2 has had hardly any sharpening, and it seems very sharp...I just don't get it clearly :D - actually, maybe it is soft but the contrast makes it appear sharper...

Hi Gary, I think that you are being over critical, No 2 and No 5 are really beautiful.

I think it looks sharp although slightly over exposed on my screen.
But you said in your original post that it was soft?
where did you focus in that shot plus exif

Are you focussing with hyperfocal distances?

Nope, I don't understand HFD.

Number 2 I just focused on the three.

Gary.

I am being fussy as hell I know :D I just really want to nail the problems I seem to have more often than not!!
