1st has two massive bright spots (one in the sky and one in the sea) and the second is very very dark on my monitor...

You can never please some people ehh? :)

Seriously though, not sure what to recommend, perhaps bracketing and blending, or some sort of light reducing filter (Is it an ND grad?)...

Gary.

Yes Gary, it's an ND grad and they come in various strengths. You can also get grey grads, tobacco grads for those sunsets, purple grads, blue grads and some really, truly awful coloured grads :)

The second one is working just fine for me (on my calibrated monitor, sticks tongue out at Gary!) but there is a blob of what looks like sensor dust in the sea just to the left.

i did use ND grad filters for the above shots, and they were correctly exposed according to the camera.my photoshop skills are very limited,so not entirely sure what/how to get the best out of them...as you say, maybe i should have bracketed the shots..

thanks ali re:the dust spot.strange how its not on any of the other shots i took, and the lens never left the body ,unless something got on the lens of filter whilst shooting.

i've had a play in photoshop (with the first image) and came up with this...

i've upped the saturation in the sky, plus darkened the blown out bit

I like No 2, but your PS version of No 1 in my opinion is better than your original. It's a shame in No 1 that you didn't get nearer in to the edge, as I think there is too much green in the forefront.

No 2 for me Stan!

Sorry I haven#t been around to look at all the shots, but my computers playing merry hell and only working when it feels like it!

Found a new bumper for the beemer, £10 on ebay ;)

BoT.....

Have you tried blending 2 exposures for the first one?

One RAW developed for the sky and then one for the foreground?

hi spencer,

good news on the bumper, and i hope it's local to you as postage would cost a pretty penny

Yes I prefer that one. I agree with what Ghandi says that it would be good to use 2 separate exposures.
Instructions:
1.Open RAW file in Bridge.
2.Adjust exposure to get good detail in sky, don't worry about the foreground, then save as jpeg.
3. Make another exposure adjustment in Bridge to adjust for foreground, don't worry that the background looks wrong, then save as jpeg.
4.Open Photoshop.
5.Open both jpegs you have just made. Choose Window tile horizonal.
6. In one of the jpegs chose move tool, hold down shift key and drag contents of window over to the other file.
7.Close down first file.
8.Click on icon at bottom of layers palette. It looks like a square with a circle in the middle to add layer mask.
9.Click on little white box that appears at right of layer, to make sure that it is selected.
10.Choose a brush, make sure that colour is black, and then paint on the layer in black where you want the underneath layer to show through.
That's it.
You can get a lot more complicated but that should be sufficient to do the job.

Sorry I didn;t get back to you sooner Stan, was a touch preoccupied by having me teeth out!

HWG is completely correct in the methodology.

If you want to email the raw file I'll have a play for you and show you what I mean maybe?

My email addy should be in my profile. If not, just PM me and I can send you the sun-compass and other stuff too!

Bridge is part of Photoshop CS3, but if you are using PS 7 then forget the bit about Bridge. I take it that if you are using PS7 you are starting of with jpg files.
Open the file in PS7, and adjust your levels, colours or whatever to get the sky right. Save the file.
Create a duplicate and adjust levels, etc to get the foreground right. Save file with new name.
Now carry on from step 5. Hope this helps Mark.
