I'd like to hear from other Sony Alpha users, having just got an a300.
The majority of photogs use Canon or Nikon, so if it's ok with da management, I'd like to start a Sony Alpha thread.
So if you are a Sony a user, would like to be, were once but not anymore, then lets chat!!
Bodies, lenses, accessories etc..........

LOL @ sportysnaps!!!!
I don't think it'll be very long.
The only reason, I believe that they aren't as popular is the lens (or lack of them) range.
And allot of buying comes from word of mouth. Allot of folk will seek advice when buying a camera, and 9 out of 10 people will suggest either Canon or Nikon.
£450 (Jessops!) for the a300, £100 for the Siggy 70-300mm APO DG Macro.
To get a 10MP body and kit lens, stabilized 70-300mm lens (which produces AWESOME shots....) setup, I don't think you'd get a Canon or Nikon equivalent for that price.
No dis-respect to either, as they have a well deserved-great reputation, but Sony deserve a bit of the credit I think.

sony alpha100 here...my first DSLR.it's a great camera with lots of features etc, with my only gripe being the price of sony lens, but having said that, there's lots of KM lens on e-bay that are cheap as chips.i picked up a 50mm F1.7 prime for £40 in excellent condition.it doesn't bother me buying 3rd party lens so long as they're good glass, and my sigma 105 F2.8 macro lens is testament to that.
Hey Stan, I was near you at the weekend, went to the Aberdulais Falls on Sunday afternoon for a look round on our way back from Tenby.
Will be checking out the photos from my A100 later on today once back from work.

hi JPS..what did you think of aberdulais falls?
my opinion is that they're not particularly specacular, but easily accessable to the disabled and elderly, whereas all the other falls in the area are certainly not.
i'll look forward to seeing your pics on here.i too am an alpha 100 user

Sony has announced a 25mp full frame DSLR for later this year. Since Sony wishes to break the Canon Nikon duopoly, I am sure the price will be attractive.
Another A200 user, love the camera and the pics, and with Sigma and Tamron providing lenses for a decent price you can't go wrong

To get a good clear view of the falls was rather difficult with my tripod, could have done with one where the centre column can be moved to lie horizontal to get over and above the railings. Apart from that, I quite liked the place, it had just stopped raining at about 2pm ish when we arrived. Bit of a last minute thing really, just saw the brown tourist signs and thought we'd take a look as long as it wasn't too far from the beaten track - bearing in mind we were only an hour and a half into a six hour car ride home, then as luck would have it, they are only just off the juction so not much of a detour.

Hey Hammerhead, how is your Sigma 170-500, any good?
A100 and A700 owner here and couldn't be more happy. Yes the Sony lenses are fewer and expensive, but I'm sure that will change in time. In the meantime, Sigma and Tamron are more than capable, the aforementioned 105mm macro especially so.

Not a Sony user yet but may be making the A200 or A300 my first DSLR soon. :)
Remember to put a photo or two on here if you do get one of the Alpha's.
I was a Minolta owner in my film days, so I intended buying either the A300 or A350, but when I found out there was no Depth of Field preview changed my mind. Couldn't afford the A700 so I ended up with Canon 40D. I'm sure the Sony's are great cameras, but I'm glad I ended up with the 40D
Not sure why Sony left the DOF button off the new cameras, my A100 has it so you would think that they would carry it on over to the new models.

The other models except the a300 have live view. That's why there is no DOF button! They don't need it!!
I note that the Alpha 700 made it into the best buys on the Which DLSR review. The reviewers didn't like it in auto mode and would have rated it much lower based on the auto mode only, however the manual modes raised the camera into the top four.

For £230 I couldn't be happier, :D however I have only had one proper opportunity to use it and that didn't turn out as I'd hoped :( :bang:

Good to hear from other Sony users.
I just bought a spare battery for my a300.
Cheapest I could find was £42  from DigitalRev (London).
Out of interest, what do you guys who own one think of the DT18-70mm 'kit' lens?
I think it's a cracking lens, which doesn't deserve some of the bad things I've heard about it!
I think it's quite capable and appears to have a better reputation than some other brands' kit lenses. I used mine on my first paid shoot and the recipients were very pleased with the results.

Hey, congrats on the first paid shoot!
Nice one!
Well I'm thinking it's a damn fine lens, which I'm not in a hurry to upgrade.
Thanks, that was a year ago now. I don't use the lens anymore as I prefer to use primes where possible and the Tamron 18-250 where a zoom is needed. The 18-70 is a great lens to start out with though and it certainly got me started.
I'm on the verge of buying from the Sony Alpha range - been a Minolta user for quite some time and would like to keep using the lenses that I have. It's good to hear what you guys have to say about these cameras!

Andy, i would check out spare batteries on ebay, cant remember where i got mine from on there, but there are quite a few places to get generic ones from, mine for A100 was about a tenner including postage and its every bit as good as the branded one.
Any of you guys had any experience with the Sony 16 -105 3.5 5.6 lens. This is currently one of the bundles that the A700 is coming with, along with the CZ16-80. I have seen a few reviews saying that the 16 - 105 is a great performer and I just wondered if any one here could vouch for it.

I'm sure they are a very nice lens, but is the £400 + price tag really justified?
Can this lens REALLY be that good?
i'm an a100 owner and i'm pretty pleased with the camera so far..
My reason for buying it over canon/nikon was because i already had a couple of lenses for my old minolta dynax 300si and i thought it would be a good stepping stone into the world of digital slr's....
The fact that there are literally millions of quality second hand lenses available is also a bonus :)
Still trying to get a decent beercan for cheap though :)
Just to add myself to this thread, Sony a100 user and very happy too! Initially chose the Sony because a couple of mates are Canon and Nikon users and thought i'd buck the trend, plus the chunky Alpha suits my big hands.
As for the CZ 16-80 being worth it... will let you know when it arrives, hopefully gonna be on Wednesday then it off to Spain for me hols, post some shots when i'm back.
Chewy: Thats exactly the same reason that made me go for the sony. My hands are pretty big and the others were just too small to be comfortable..
Anybody here got a lens that they wouldn't mind hiring out to me for a couple of weeks in late July into August? A good portrait/wedding lens qould be ideal. I have the Minolta 50mm f1.7 but would like something with a wider angle. Bit cheeky asking I know. ;)

Just had an Alpha 200 for 2 weeks, having used Minolta 35mm cameras before. Have to say I love the Sony, and for around 280 quid its a sweet bit of kit. . I do have a few minor improvements I would make if I could.
Liveview would be nice for the odd occasion when the viewfinder is inaccessible, but I find in 99% of situations I love the information display, and as an old school photographer I instinctively go for the viewfinder anyway.
As I enjoy HDR, I would have liked the auto bracketing to be wider than +/-0.7 and would like to take more than 3 exposures.
The real niggle for me is that the software is not compatible with 64bit vista, and that there are no 64bit codecs available so you can view your camera raw files in windows. Given that 64bit processors are practically the norm now, this is a major oversight by Sony, and I hope their software department are working on it as we speak.
These are only minor points, and have not put me off the A200 at all, as the positives really drown out the niggles.
The camera is really comfortable in the hand, and all the controls are ergonomically placed. The camera is full of advanced features and they all work well. I love the Sony infolithium batteries, nothing worse for me than a camera that takes AA batteries.
I know you didnt ask for a camera review, but thought I would add my first impressions of the camera. I wouldnt hesitate in buying the same camera again.:)

Worth a try mate!
Well I'm a convert. I used to have a canon 400D and became so confused with all the new stuff I had to learn, I got rid of it. I stuck with my Sony Bridge DSC H9 for a while but decided to try DSLR again. Sticking with Sony, I bought the a200 and I am much happier with it than I ever was with the Canon. The built in IS meant that I could look to using any lens that would fit, and already have Image Stability at my finger tips. I know that the lens are expensive if you buy top of the range, but Sigma and Tamron etc do some very good equivalent for use on the Sony. I will use the a200 to improve my understanding of DSLR, and when I'm ready and finances allow move up to the 300 or 700, depending on the cost at the time.
If there are peeps out there who are still undecided about which camera to start off with, you cant go far wrong with the Sony range.
Come on in and join the party:nuts:

Sorry about not replying sooner....i've still not had a sucessful outing with my 170-500mm yet:bang:. All i can say is that in terms of image quality from the few shots I have taken i'm am quite pleased. It is a heavy lens to carry and the limited f5/6.3 aperture means you need a lot of light for anything moving fast. I'm not sure I would have bought one new/full price but as I got it at a bargain price I am very happy. Will post some shots once I have something decent to show.

Hey Gaz.
Nice post mate.
I too had the 400D for a bit, and I took a gamble and went for the a300. I'm glad I did! For once I feel as though I made the right decision!!
My reason were mainly for the built in IS, and also the live view screen for me is invaluable.
Bit of a bummer about len's being quite few and far between, but in all honesty, I never will have huge amounts of money to spend on len's anyway!
My (little) range of len's suits me down to the ground.
My next move may be to replace the kit lens, but as a budget kit lens, I think it's pretty good.
Other than that, I think I'm just about there now, lens wise!

If your lenses worked on the 100, they'll work on your new 350, basically!
Not really any major issues that I'm aware of.

have a look here (http://web.canon.jp/imaging/enjoydslr/index.html) for a nice simple guide. Play around with the kit lens until you have got your head around it and are ready to upgrade. The Beercan (Minolta 70-210mm F4) is a great lens and would be a great first buy for motorsport.
A good value upgrade for the kit lens is the Sigma 24-70 2.8, If you are looking for a wide and the Minolta 17-35 2.8-4 is not bad for the money. For really wide the Sigma 10-20mm is great. Another cheapo lens to get in your bag is the fixed 50mm 1.7, good for portraits.

I've bought lots of lenses from ebay, but have a look at dyxum first - often you get stuff a little cheaper.
Hoods are there to reduce lens flare, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lens_flare)particularly when shooting into the sun

the dyxum forum, will have a look round it.
Hope someone can enlighten me as to the cause of this one.........
I have an a200, on which I have been using some of the lenses that I used to use with my Minolta Dynax 500si and have had no problems thus far. However, I tried using another lens, namely a "Sigma 1A-zoom, 70 - 210 power zoom" and get the message "shutter locked, no lens fitted" every time I try to take a picture. I tried the lens on my Dynax and it worked perfectly. Any ideas? I'm off on holiday this afternoon so if I don't get to reply, I apologise in advance.
How are you finding the A700 Pete? The shutter on my 5D has just packed up so it might be time to replace it depending on what the insurers say about repairs.
I can't get over the price of the grip though and I keep wondering whether I'll buy the 700 and wish I'd bought a D300 instead.

Hi Kev,
I'm happy with the A700, it's a big upgrade from the 7D. I'm not sure whether it's better than the Nikon, at the end of the day they have very similar sensors. If you look at it rationally, the benefits of the Alpha mount are
1. VR in the body
2. A huge stock of old quality lenses
The disadvantages are
1. Expensive new high end lenses
2. lack of supply of accessories making things like lens rental impossible
I personally feel that the A700 with a beercan, for example, can not be beaten in terms of quality for the price by anything that Nikon or Canon can offer. I have ended up upgrading away from that and my A700 with the 70-200 2.8 G is an awesome combination, but is it better than a D300 with Nikon 70-200 2.8 or 40D with 70-200 2.8 IS L?
Probably not, it’s nice to be a bit different though.

Shezz, the story goes that Sigma had a very cavalier attitude to paying to license the Minolta technology needed to make their lenses work with Minolta AF. Rather than pay to use it like other manufacturers, they chose to reverse engineer (hack) the firmware in chips from Minolta. One of the implications of this is that their lenses aren't always forward compatible. If the camera body didn't exist when the lens was made it might not recognise the lens.
You can often see this in the exif from pictures shot with Sigma lenses, I think my 170-500 reports as a 70-300 and a 90mm Macro I've got kicking around swears it's a 100mm.
Buyer beware when picking up s/h Sigma from eBay ;)

First post on here to say that I've moved from a sony DSC-V1 P&S to the A350 plus kit lens.
Only had it 3 days and think it's a great little camera. Am looking at getting the 50mm/1.7 lens and maybe a beercan too.
I am off to America in October, any bargains I should be aiming to pick up? I shoot alsorts from potraits to landscapes, motorsport to rugby.
What bags are people using, any pictures of them with kit in?
Also can anyone recommend a lens hood for the kit lens?

well, the guy hasn't come back to me..so i may hang on to the 100 a bit longer as i've not got the best from it(or me),which means i may get another lens...decisions decisions..
I'm getting a bit peeved now to be honest. I was out at the weekend taking 'posed people' shots using the Minolta 1.7 and could I get a sharp shot, no I couldn't. Maybe I was having a bad day.
Using centre AF point, AF-C, ISO 100 and ISO 200 using a selection of F1.7, F2.2, F2.8 etc etc. Good job these photos were not for anything special, the weather was nice but the photos all turned out naff.......... Sometimes I get peeved with this camera lark...:bang:

I know how you feel mate :bang:
Can't see that you were doing anything wrong
Perhaps try using AF-A or AF-S??
Don't know anything about this lens, but an F/1.7 lens should get you some good results.
I went to Biggin Hill airshow last month, and I took over 350 shots.
Less than 20 shots were 'usable', so to speak.
Usable as in good enough to post on here, flickr etc. The rest were just ok enough to keep, for a little while at least!!
Do you use RAW?
This will get the max quality shots for your camera.
RAW is a bit fiddly, but amazing when you get used to it!

Oh man, that's a bummer
That's a tough decision to make.
I'm sure the a100 is very capable of taking a great shot. Well, I KNOW it is, as I had one for a while!
The 300 and 350 are fab camera's, but the only real difference is the live view. Which incidentally I couldn't live without now
Except the MP's with the a350 being 14.1.
Actually, if I had my way, I'd take a few features from the a100 and put them onto my a300. The main one being the second dial for the functions. I really liked this feature of the a100.....
A tough decision mate, and I'm sure you'll make the right one.

Didn't think about the mirror lock up, but yes you're right.
I don't really know much about the DOF preview as I never used it on my Canon 400D, so I don't miss it

the 100 really is a lovely camera, and the reason for wanting the 350 was for the live view/tilting screen as i thought would be great to compose/focus low to the ground/macro shots..
to be honest,i've not really understood the DOF preview, other that i know that depending on what you set the aperture, you press it and it shows varying amounts of what can be clearly seen:shrug:
i also love how it fits in the hand, positioning of buttons/controls etc.....

I don't fully understand it either tbh :bonk:
Apparently it's not needed on the a300/a350 due to the live view. So I've read.....
That live view screen is a huge selling point.
My main reason for changing back to Sony was this. And I'm glad I did.
It's absolutely awesome. And auto focus is still fast and smooth when live viewing, which I understand some other live view models struggle with.
You also get a live histogram, which can be very useful.
I have an interest in macro work, so for me the LV is a must.
Some of my shots wouldn't be possible without it. But people have managed up until now I guess!
Has anyone tried tethered shooting with the A700? Is the software any good?

Well the CZ 24 - 70 f2.8 arrived this morning, less than 24 hours after I had ordered it - well done London Camera Exchange and the guys at City Link.
Not had much of a chance to do any 'serious' testing, but I have noticed that the RAW files from the A700 are about 20mb, whereas the RAW from my A100 were somewhere between 8 and 11mb on average. Big difference for only an extra 2mp......

Having a few issues with the A700, either the AF isn't quite right or I'm a numpty - hoping it's the latter to be honest. That's why I've not posted any examples up yet as I'm sure there is something not quite right.
I have spent a fair bit of time tonight indoors - not the best place to try the 70 - 200 G but never mind. I have managed to get this following shot that seems rather sharp and clear. This is the clock on our mantlepiece, taken at a slight angle so not to reflect too much flash.
This is the full shot then a 100% crop of the clock face.

Hey Stan, how are you finding the a350??
Recently purchased my first DSLR, an A200 with kit lens (18-70mm).
Owned a couple of 35mm SLR's in the 80's (Oly OM2 and a Minolta 7000) and read quite a few books so know a little about the basics, but I'm really interested in getting the most from my photos with some basic PP. Don't really understand it all but I'm willing to read and learn.
Have purchased three lenses from E-bay already ()
Tamron 55-200mm f4-5.6 LD Di II and a Minolta 50mm f1.7 prime for £50.00.
I only got the 50mm yesterday but trying it out last night I am amazed at the quality compared to the standard kit lens.
Also "won" a Minolta 24-85mm f3.5-4.5 yesterday morning which gets pretty good reviews allround and I'm looking forward to trying this out when it arrives.
If it's as good as they say it is, then I will use this in place of the kit lens as my "walkabout".
I told the Missus not to worry, once I had the camera I wouldn't need anything else for a while.
She doesn't know about the CPL's, tripod, remote release, spare battery and camera bag that are winging their way to me yet....:lol::lol:
Looking forward to picking up a few tips from the guys that know what they're doing!

That 50mm 1.7 has blown me away mate.
I cannot believe that a different piece of glass could make that much difference.
I got some reasonable results last week-end just snapping away at the kids playing in the garden with the 18-70 but I can't wait to get out and about with this lens.
I have read that the 28-85 is "almost" as sharp so I'm really looking forward to experimenting with that a little.
I was tempted to go with the 300 by the way, as I wear glasses I thought I might struggle having to use a viewfinder again and the Liveview was a real attraction for me.
But I got such a good deal on the 200 I decided to stick with it.
Thanks for the welcome btw.

welcome to the world of the alpha, and of course the TP family
not sure about the software question, but i can recommend practical photography magazine, and digital camera magazine..
Numpty nuts after a bit of general advice.
When I bought my 200 I started looking at zoom lenses.
Like plenty of other idiots before me, I went into it "helter skelter" and in the excitement didn't really study lens options properly.
Subsequently, I purchased a couple of Tamron lenses, namely the 55-200mm f4-5.6 Di II and the 70-300mm f4-5.6 Di II.
Bit of an overlap there I know, but as they say, "a fool and his money etc."
I bought them both because they had reasonable reviews and were cheap...:(:(:(
I'm now considering the old faithful Minolta 70-210 "Beercan" as a viable alternative to both of these lenses. Every review I read about these comments on the sharpness, bokeh etc.
So my question is.....
Would you sell the two Tammys and go for a "mint" beercan?

Hi numpty nuts
I can't speak for the two Tammy's as I've never used either, but I've seen nothing but great reviews on the beercans.
I've seen a few on ebay recently with a BIN price of £139.
Not a bad price........

The Beercan is a gem. The following it has is pretty much a cult but to a great extent it is justified.
They are like one of those recipes that are greater than the sum of their parts. They are sharp but not the sharpest, the constant f4 is fast but not the fastest, they produce great colours and contrast but aren't optimised for digital, the bokeh is sublime and consistant. When it's all put together you have something quite extraordinary.
Just buy one ;)

Looks like he bought it a few days ago for a lot less than that...and his feedback doesn't inspire me to be honest Andy..
I've seen a mint one on Dyxum which I've emailed the seller about. Looks in much better condition and would work out roughly the same price by the time it's shipped over from the U.S.
Problem is, the guy will only take bank transfers and has only made four posts on the site :(:(:(

Hi All,
New to the Forum & 'pro'? photography.... looks as though this is the place to be if you're a Sony user.
Just aquired a Sony A350 as an insurance replacement but not a clue what to do with it and seems it would be easier trying to interpret the manual for the space shuttle...lol
New to this DSLR stuff so looking to pick up a few pointers...bit more complicated than my last point & shoot gizmo
Looking to try some macro photography (insects, flowers and maybe more distant birds etc) with this thing and trying to find a decent lens (that's how I stumbled across this forum) but everything seems to be geared towards Canon or Nikon.
Reading the posts, the Sigma 105mm F/2.8 EX DG Macro seems to get a good review....or would it be better to go for something a bit longer like the 150mm or 180mm to give you the best of both worlds...and would you get the same macro quality with the longer lenses...or,would you go for something completely different?...Arrggh! :bang:
What a minefield
Thank you in advance...

An invaluable source of information on different lenses is available here...
http://www.dyxum.com/lenses/index.asp
A lot of the older Minolta AF lenses get brilliant reviews and can be purchased used from e-bay.
One of the best initial purchases you can make is the Minolta 50mm f1.7 "prime". They come up fairly frequently (although they are getting very popular now with the increase in Alpha sales) and can be be had for around £50.00 for a decent copy.
The difference in quality compared to the standard kit lens is evident straightaway.

Hi
TP is just the best place to be whatever gear you use.
The Sony lens situation has primarily forced me to jump ship. Lack of local retail outlets holding stock to enable potential buyers a chance to try before they buy is something Sony have to address and soon. The Alpha range is good and always does well in reviews. I'm sure i'll miss my A100 + Lenses.
Skydiver
The Sigma 105mm f2.8 macro was the lens I had my eye on for a long time and I don't think I have heard a bad word against it. So i'm sure you won't go wrong with it. However without actually trying it I was always reluctant to take the plunge as the options of the 150mm or 180mm was always in the back of my mind also the 90mm. Good luck on venturing into the minefield.
So for now go...go...go Team Sony but i'm soon to be Team Sonikon.

Hi Ken.
Welcome aboard mate!
Glad you joined the forum, and even more glad you found this thread!
It's full of Sony Alpha users, and they (notice I didn't say WE!!!!) are full of useful info.
People always insist that you read these goddamm awful manuals.
Personally, I don't bother. They mas as well be written in Chinese!
If there's anything specific you want to know about the camera, just ask here. Someone will always answer!
My advice, I'm not saying it's good advice, would be to use full auto mode, just for a while until you get used to handling it.
Get to know it a bit, the feel, the ease of use, how fast it is etc, then when you want to know more, give us a shout and we'll explain how to get MUCH more from your new toy!!
Incidentally, I've got a Sigma 50mm f2.8 DG Macro EX than I'm considering selling.
If I do, I'll put it in the for sale section, and let this thread know.
73's to you mate ;)

skydiver...i have the sigma 105 F2.8 EX DG macro lens, and it's a cracker.i use mine for shots of flowers and insects mostly, but it makes a brill portrait lens also...
the 150 and 180 siggy's would most prob be better for insects as you can work further away from your subject so less likely to scare them, but are apparently quite heavy so not really suitable for hand held shooting.....
also, the 50mm F1.7 minolta lens that smiffy recommends is deffo a must have for little money

Just to say i bought the Gary Friedman ebook guide for the A100, cuts through a lot of technical BS and puts all i needed to know it in layman terms. It's very good and came highly reccomended on Dyxum etc. On his website, he's done a guide for the A350, hopefully that one is just as good.

i have recently bought the battery grip for the 350,and i have the 2 batteries it requires for use,so my question is...
a/can i take one out once it's exhausted it's charge,so i can recharge it and then place back in the grip..
OR...
b/would i be better off getting another 2 batteries so i can replace them once the 2 batteries are exhausted...if so,are there any 3rd party batteries anyone can recommend, even though sony only recommend using their own infolithium batteries..which are £50 each
unless someone knows of a place to get them cheaper :naughty:

Good questions mate ;)
The kit lens is good, I still maintain that.
I shall be keeping it for the wide angle, if nothing else.
Since I've been using the 50mm EX, the superb quality of the shots it produces has made me decide I want more!
I'll be looking at the 18-50mm F2.8 EX probably, or 17-70mm F2.8-4.5, depending on how much £££££ I can get up together!
Maybe even the Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 Di-II LD Aspherical.
I find myself using the 50mm more and more, again due to the quality.
But a fixed 50mm is a bit limiting, if you know what I mean??!!
Both are good lens, so I'm not really in a hurry to be honest.

The 17-70 isn't an EX am I right?
Not that I think it would make that much difference.
I've heard it's a pukka lens!
I've just had all my new gear insured on a 'semi pro' basis. New for old, liability insurance and also indemnity cover. For £282 and a few pence.
I have another wedding tomorrow and I don't fancy making a mess of it and getting my backside sued off - or indeed dropping the 200 G onto the floor.........or for that matter the 24-70 Zeiss either.

Well, did my second wedding since getting my new gear the other week. Pity it rained during the church service, I had to do the photos in the church as no-one quite rightly wanted to stand out in all that rain and wind, myself included. This young lady asked if I could take a photo of her and her dad just as I was leaving for night.

The majority of photogs use Canon or Nikon, so if it's ok with da management, I'd like to start a Sony Alpha thread.
So if you are a Sony a user, would like to be, were once but not anymore, then lets chat!!

Each Model has something right about it for different reasons so being a vertual novice I would never recomend or condem a model BUT..... ??? .... Ive been swayed to the A300 but just need a couple of user reports.
1) Ive been warmed off Sony because of the CCD sensor being bad and not getting replacements or instore help ect has anybody had a problem with it.
2) Does the 1.4x & 2x zoom facility work with all lenses attatched (yes I know about pixel reduction and drop in f nos)
3) Im not poffessional but looking to upgrade from compact digital so high pixal rating although good is not my main aim. Im looking for a camera that will look smart and be functional for novice in low light, for reasonably good sporting photos, easy to set modes
Rightly or wrongly this model has stuck with me so any feedback either way would be appriciated Ta :bonk:

Don't know any specifics in the a300, but I have an a100 and a700. I'm very curious as to who warned you off regarding the sensors as I have never heard any problems and I believe that Sony make sensors for Nikon.
What do you mean by 1.4x and 2x zoom? Are you referring to teleconverters? If so, I'm not sure the model of camera will make any difference there.
To be fair, your needs can be met by any of the cameras you are considering as they would be met more by the choice of lenses. I shoot polo mostly and am pretty satisfied with the Sonys in that respect.

Ditto.

I'm thinking OP means the smart teleconvertor?
If so, then yes it'll work with any lens, but not in RAW mode.

 3/4 weeks ago I was all set for a Cannon 450 but have since had hands on feels of Nikon Pentax & Sony.
Im looking for a camera that will look smart and be functional for novice in low light, for reasonably good sporting photos, easy to set modes

i won't answer your questions again,as they've been answered by andy and fabs....
BUT..whatever camera you choose,it has to feel good in the hand for size and positioning of controls etc..i have quite big hands,so the nikon D40's canon 400's etc felt a bit small in hand to me,hence i plumbed for the sony.if it doesn't feel right, you will be inclined to not use it.i'm on my 2nd one now..had the A100 first, and recently got the A350 as i liked the look of the liveview facility, and the fact i could get a battery grip for it as there wasn't one available for the A100.
good luck in your quest...

Would you believe I went for the Sony because my hands are on the SMALL side and I like the a700 (with grip) for the same reason. I think it's the reassurance of having something solid and weighty in my hands (Cue schoolboy sniggers! :suspect:)

Finally, I've uploaded some photos into my gallery :)
All 4 were taken with my new Sony Alpha 200
Don't laugh - I am, after all, a n00b.......

how does the A700 compare to the A100 size wise?
i love the size of the A100 and A350 especially now i have the battery grip fitted..like you say,it's nice to have something "substancial" in your hand :naughty:
I just got a A200. This is my first DSLP and Im not sure what to make of the Kit len which came with it. It seems good to me, those I've never had a Len camera before.

Hi, nothing to run away from but they do seem a tad soft. What lens and settings did you use?

The a700 is quite a bit bigger than the a100 (About a third bigger I think, but then I'm a man and we always exaggerate about size! :naughty:). With the grip it makes the a100 look like a bridge camera!

For the first three I used the 18-70 kit lens, and for the swan I used my recently-acquired Sigma 70-300
I just used the 'P' setting on all of 'em, as I recall. Full zoom on the swan. Took that one earlier today

Hmm, can't really comment then, never use P mode so not really sure how it works. Maybe someone else could shed some light.

unfortunately i can't view the exif data on your shots.as said, the swan does look a little soft, and this may be down to shutter speed.always make sure your shutter speed at least matches your focal length..so if your shooting at 100mm F/L,you should have a shutter speed of at least 1/100 sec and so on....another good technique is to press the shutter button down as you breathe out.i also check the bar graph for the super steady shot image stabiliser to make sure it's on one or two bars(btm r/h corner of view finder).

I was using the A700 with grip, the 56AM flash unit and the hefty 24-70 Zeiss, now that is one heavy combination, I had back ache and arm ache after carring that gear around for the best part of six hours on Saturday.

Indeed. Last weekend I had the a700, grip and 50-500 Sigma and, because of the rain, I was stood under a parasol on some decking which was to slippery for the monopod. My back was killing me afterwards!

I am very happy with A200 in all regimes and with the ability to focus very fast and accurate. Quality of the photos are great but only when I used Beercan 70-210mm and Minolta 50mm F2.8. Kit lens lacks sharpness in comparassing to other two and also color is not as nice.
Camera is good investement but I am on a lookout for one more lens and I would like your opinions for which lens to go for.
Something to use on a day to day basis. I would like wide angle so I assume I should go for 18-70 or 105 perhaps but which particular lens?
I am in love with my two oldie-goldies Minolta lenses and I have no problem if they look 20+ years old as long as I get a quality photos and sharpnes spot on. Budget is important so the cheaper the better.
Any particular lens springs to mind?!
Thank you!

two great lens to replace your kit lens with are the sigma 17-70 F2.8-4.5 DC macro,or the 18-50 F2.8 EX DC macro...both very sharp lens.tamron would also be worth considering, but i have no experience of their lens.
