I was thinking of getting a Nikon D40x

Well lens wise i would probably get a wide zoom lens, as i do some photography for a car club i am on and that would probably come in handy for a group shoot, i don't really know im new to photography i guess.
*Edit*
found this on ebay
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NIKON-D40X-SLR-DIGITAL-CAMERA-18-55mm-LENS-4GB-5-BONUS_W0QQitemZ250251728594QQihZ015QQcategoryZ3138 8QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
The problem with the D40 D40x D60 is they have no AF motor in them so they need AFs lenses with the motor in the lens for AF to work, you'll only be able to use all the older nikon lenses in manual focus with these bodies, i'd go for a second hand D50 or a D80 then you can use 99% of the AF lenses made in the last 20 years

Go to a camera shop like Jessops and handle a few see how they feel in your hand. You're sure to find one that feels right and suits your needs :)

I was in Young's camera store in Peterborough city centre a couple weeks back, asking about one sadly they said they cannot let me try one out for some reason cannot remember...
Anyway there prices are terrible
For a
D40 (No lenses) It costs £300
D40x (No lenses) It costs £425
There are not many photography shops around Peterborough from what i know so i might need to go further afield for one.
Anyone from Cambridge here? If so do you know of any good shops for cameras in Cambridge near the train station ;)

If price is the 'key factor' then Argos have the Pentax K100D Super @ £250 that may be worth considering. Vast range of lens and ok camera to boot. But as always visit a shop and try a few, don't buy on name or price alone, if it don't feel right try another.

There are also various discount codes and vouchers for some retailers, another 5%-10% off in some cases.

If you only have a budget of £300 available then you're not really going to get quality glass plus a quality body for that price. You could look at the Olympus E-410 twin lens kit - which comes in at a higher price, but you get 14-42mm plus 40-150mm Zuiko lenses - the best kit glass with any DSLR in this price range. Also, perhaps take a look on ebay, or some other fora where you can find Nikon, Canon and Oly gear for sale.
Shout if you want specific info.

How close is 'near'?
If you make your way to the City Centre, near the Market there are a couple of choices. Near to the Cornish Pasty shop is Campkins Cameras. You might get a reasonable bargain there. It's about a mile from the Railway station.
Perversely, there aren't too many shops near the station!
There's a shop on King's Parade opposite King's College.... I think they're associated with Campkins!

I should point out.... I think they've been associated with a company called KPProf which has disappeared off the radar (not able to compete with the internet but was trading as a Pro supplier for years :suspect:) and it was quite close to the station.
Because of this Campkins has inherited all sorts of stuff - kit, s/h kit (even staff I reckon), customers.
I can assure you the most up to date (and accurate) thing on their web is their address. What I'm saying is 'they are vastly busy and have forgotten they have web pages'! They are competitive - the shop has always been full when I've been passed. Not really allowed in! And if you're desperate their is always Jessops. Actually, as Jessops' goes, this is not a bad branch!

carefull with ebay. Like the one which has been listed in this thread a lot are either purchased off Ebay and simply relisted with 'extras' to tempt buyers. They list them in such a way that they give you the impression that they are new, when infact they are not.
I recently put my Fuji S5500 on Ebay, only to see that another was listed buy it now for £99.00 from a seller who funny enough was bidding on mine starting at 99p!!! He just bundled his with a 'tripod' without specifying if the item is in fact new. So he simply is a reseller of previously sold items on Ebay.
My recommedation, is that if the camera appears to be a trader other than a private seller, look for the 'brand new' or simply do not bother bidding.
Cheers
