View Full Version : Big Cat Meets from July 6th
hypnotic

It's that time of year again.
If you missed it last year, now is your chance to get up close and personal with tigers, leopards, lions, cheetahs, ocelots & the new pallas cats. Not forgetting the cute (and extremely fast) Malawi the serval.
I have managed to secure three photography days at the WHF site in Kent. The WHF website is here (http://www.whf.org.uk/index.cfm) (but it is not updated very often)
These dates are Sunday 6th July ... Saturday 9th August & Saturday 23rd August.
Costs for the day are £70 per person which includes a buffet lunch.
Last years meet can be seen in this (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=32023) thread.
I want to avoid any last minute hiccups this year by getting the days paid for as quickly as possible. If you put yourself forward for a place I will pm you the details. Your place(s) will then be held for two weeks pending payment.
A few spaces are already taken by people who came on the last trip.
If you are interested in coming to one or more of these days, please post what day(s) you are interested in and I will get back to you.
Any questions? ... Just ask.

The July date is too close for me to organise myself, but the august one could be a goer.
Is there a travel lodge near?
I Cba driving down to Kent havinga day out and driving back the same day.
July too close to organise ? its flipping well over a month away ? Remember its JUNE next month not July ;)

Your 55-250mm should be fine. Most of my shots last year were taken at 200-280. I would also have liked to have had something shorter though.
You can make your own way there or we can see if we can work out a lift if you are on someones route.
Still room on 9th August.

Couldn't agree more. I actually found my 100-400 was too long for a lot of shots. I would say I took about 30% of my shots with my 24-105 :)

I can't recommend the WHF highly enough. I went a couple of weeks ago and enjoyed it so much I've booked again for early September.
I wish I'd known about these plans sooner, I'd love to have met some of you. As it is the purse strings won't stretch to 3 visits in 1 year.
Hope you all have great days out and the weather is as kind for you as it was for us.

Fortunately these visits are only 70 quid, unlike the wildarena and experience seminar ones at 130 plus ! :) Just hoping the weather holds out :)

Something has been asked via pm that I feel I should clear up on this thread and put it to bed.
The Whf website shows the ticket price as £55 for the day. (not £70).
This is down to the fact that while Mark and his team are great at looking after the big cats, they are quite bad at updating their website. We had the same problem with the last trip in September. The higher price reflects the fact that they are now liable for vat and an increase in other prices.
I have asked Mark to change the price on the website to reflect this but they have yet to do it. Anyone can ring him to check these facts for themselves.
I make no personal profit from organising these days. I could actually lose money should I not get enough people to go on the day.
I hope that clears that up ... :D
Lets all start praying for some good weather.

I have considered charging £75 for these days due to the fact that they are half the price of other organised events there.
The excess could then go towards the running costs of this great forum that we all enjoy.
Too late now though .... Maybe next year ... :D

Even though I already sent you the cheque, I would be happy to pay an extra 5 on the day, especially since I made more then enough from the last one to pay for the last one and this one.

Well losing the fence in the photo is a trick pulled off with physics and witchcraft but anyone can do it with practice and some knowledge.
Well unlike the cats none of us bite, and you will could potentially learn a lot so dont let inexperience put you off, we all started somewhere :)

Forecast for Sunday looks like showers, but so far this week it hasntt right , yesterday we were suposed to have heavy rain all day but had one shower, to day was supposed to be wet and again although it keeps getiing over cast it hasn't rained yet, although a couple of days ago they were saying fine for today so who knows ?
I'm off to the supermarket tomorrow so will get a supply of very large plastic bags, (rubber bands I can acquire from work ;) ) my camera and lens are supposed to be waterproof & I have used it in rain and snow, but at least we'll have a back up for those that aren't

Hi Jeff.
Everyone who is going on the 9th August was going to get a pm from me this weekend coming. This usually helps to keep it fresh in the memory.
The address for the WHF is ...
Headcorn Road
Smarden,
Ashford
Kent
TN27 8PJ
It is at the back of Marley Farm Industrial Estate.
Most sat navs should be able to find it but we can meet up at Maidstone services on the M20 if anybody wants to. Nobody gets left behind in this army ... :D
The day starts at around 10am with the safety briefing. Lunch comes around at about 1pm. After lunch we continue with photographing the cats that we did not manage to see during the morning.
The day should end at around 5.30 - 6pm.
All the times are fairly flexible depending on what the group want to do.
My mobile number is 07825 446778 if anyone needs it on the day or before.
The link to the WHF website can be found on the first post in this thread if anybody wants to read it.

the final leg of the journey was a mare tbh...... Rain along the a41 mixed with tiredness really wasn't a sensible thing to do :nono:
Hope the postie doesn't bring me an invite to add to the local constabulary Christmas party fund as although I was sat doing 60ish along the 41, there's a couple of speed cams on the route I don't remember passing
In fact I can't remember much at all about the last leg of the trip.
Moral....... Don't drive tired :nono:
I might have a look at the pics at some point, if I have one of each cat I'm happy with the trip will have been worthwhile.
kev, thanks for organsing a great day. :)
Beverley and I had a great day. We were so lucky with the weather :D although the sun was a bit of a bugger at times. I still managed to come away with a pink head
I've had a quick look through my shots and I think I've got a few keepers of each cat :) Oh and some nice people shots
It was great to catch up with old friends and meet some new faces too. Hope to meet you all again soon :).
Glad you got back OK Brian. That was a hell of a journey to take on after a long day. I was knackered driving back to Reading, I can't imaging driving for another 3 hours after that :shake:
Thanks for organising it Kev. Great job mate
Looking forward to seeing everyone's shots ;)

Hi all,
I'm sitting in a little shack in a campsite near Corfe Castle, Swanage - it's raining :-(
Still, I had to get on the computer and say a massive thanks to you all for a terrific day yesterday - I wouldn't of missed it is I was camping at lands end, I thought the whole day was amazing and I cannot wait for the next one (I'll definately be there).
Can't look at my pictures yet as my laptop battery is dead, but the ones Ian has posted at the moment are cracking.
Thanks for organising Kevin... Most appreciated!
Gonna also put a donation into the WHF as I think the work they are doing is great.
(ps. I looked up live feeding on YouTube and wished I hadn't, I couldn't watch it all :-()
It was great to finally meet you and Bev after all this time
Likewise mate. Sorry we didn't get much chance to chat. So much going on! Enjoy the rest of your weekend :)

It's been great looking at all your pictures from the various Cat Days. I'm looking forward to Sept even more after reading how much everyone enjoyed them.
I may have missed it but did anyone take group photos? Can someone point me in the right direction if there are any.
Thanks, Di

Great to meet everyone, im sure you will all be pleased to know that the 25minute drive home for me passed off safely, with a brief stop at the local curry house for supplies
