Candle Magic...

But how can I improve this sort of shot when I attempt it again?
I was experimenting, but I never quite managed to get what I was hoping for.

Im not sure what you were hoping for. i assume still life candles and flowers shot.
I think first off you are way to close to the subject, also the candle isnt providing enough light.
First pic - try and small light in front of the bottle to light it.
2nd Pic - Compostion is really poor, get the whole candle and flower in the shot.
3rd Pic - Again this suffers from no light.

One thing about all three is the focus seems way off.

You can shoot the pics in brightly lit rooms and just PP them to get the effect you want.

Try this...Black background, candle and Flower, get lots of light on both so you are not having to use a long exposure or having to use a High ISO, and stand back a bit.
