it's a goodun, but it would help if you said what system you use, eg canon/nikon/olympus/minolta etc :)

i'm using nikon and the nikon sb-600 is the best for that money as it uses nikons creative lighting system .

I have the Sigma EF 500 DG Super (used on a 20D) purchased from Bristol Cameras. No horror stories, an excellent flash, does everything the 580EX does at half the price. I've never handled the 580 so cant compare build quality but the Sigma is a well built unit. HTH.

I did my first paid shoot on Thursday and as I was the official photographer I got to nudge the press guys out of the way!

2 out of the 3 I was working alongside had the 580EX along with myself and they both commented that it pays for itself in recharge speed and how far it can throw.

We were working under stupid lighting conditions and out of the 200 shots I got, at least 70 of them would have been destined for the bin or at least a heavy session in Photoshop with a lesser unit.

I'd never put it to the test until Thursday and it certainly proved it's worth.

The rest of my gear is mediocre in professional terms but guess who's images are getting used for all their publicity material? :D

You have a choice between the Sigma 500 EF DG Super (which compares well next to the Canon 550ex). £160
Sigma pdf manual (http://www.mattsphotos.co.uk/TPF/SIG500EFDGSUP.pdf)

Or the Canon 430ex, Specifications (http://www.warehouseexpress.com/photo/flashguns/popups/canon_430EX.html).
Its a nice small unit which would marry well to your 20D.
It can be had for £165.

I've got the Canon 430ex and I'm no expert, but for me as a tool to use to get used to flashguns extra, I think its a good buy as the next step up is another £120 for the 580ex, why run before you can walk, and as a few people here have got more than one unit, if you outgrow the 430 then you can look at getting the 580 at a later date?

PS I got mine for £159 + £9 del from T4 cameras, about 2 months ago.

Same set up here, only thing I'm not keen on is the battery door, always seems to be sticky. Apart from that it's great. The instruction booklet however is rubbish.

There's a 35 quid rebate on the 580 at present: http://canonextrapromotion.onlinerebates.com/howtoclaim.aspx so buying from OneStop, for example, will take it just over the £200 mark - http://www.onestop-digital.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=25_30&products_id=49

I use the 430ex with my 20D

It looks pretty good on the 20D i think :D

I think performance is great, speed of recharge with 2500mah cells is quick and light distribution is quite even right out to the edges thanks to the built in wide panel.

The 430 can also adjust it's self to accomodate the smaller than full frame sensors.

I've got a 550EX on my D30 which I bought second hand - been really pleased with it particularly the recharge speed and the battery life. A fair number of them come up on eBay for reasonable money also.
