I am looking at buying this lens and i have been offered one for £520 and the lens is second hand, would you say this is a fare price to pay for one.

I can get a 24-105 F4 L for £500 and thats new.

I am looking for a portrait lens, its one or the other.

I have the 24-70 and I think it's great!

edit:
it's not IS but the 24-105 is but I don't really need IS in that range.

£520 is a very good price if the lens is OK

I just got my 24-70mm from Kerso today, its a nice piece of kit. Not had a chance to get out and use it but solidly built, very fast focus and very quiet. But at nearly a Kg its not easy on the wrists.

£520 is a good price for the 24-70, it's a very good lens.

Check the condition if you intend to buy. Also check for fungus and condensation inside the glass.

Looking to get a 24-70 sometime in the near future myself actually.

Thanks for the information about this lens, when i say £520 i do have to chuck a standard 17-85 IS USM lens in as well, sorry for not adding this in at the start.

i will be buying a 1D Mk111 sometime in the near future which is a FF and i use a IN as well so the lens will be ok for that camera.

Is it still a good buy?

I recently got me a 24-70, having sold my 24-105 IS many months ago.
The 24-70 is a superb lens, so easy to use (ie it feels right, has no need for IS, and is f2.8) The 24-105 was way too slow to focus in some low light situations but did have a good focal length.
I would go for a 24-70 now, though I still miss the extra length of the 24-105, but the speed of focusing makes up for it all for me. Bokeh is another thing to think of.
Comparing the 2, the 24-105 felt cheaply built, or you could say that the 24-70 feels heavy.
I have a 5d now but had a 30d when i bought the 24-105. The 24-70 is my favourite lens at present - nuff said ?

It is the 1ds that is full frame. The 1d has a 1.3x cropped APS-H CMOS sensor.
Just FYI :)

2 points - just noticed the thread is about the 24-70 IS...
No such thing I fear - mine is non IS..
As for what sort of photos do I take - people, landscapes, general stuff - take a look at my gallery for some rough idea..

24-70 is very quiet and very well built, literally just got mine, havent had much time to use it but first impressions are very good, doubt ill be changing it for a long time. Thats a good price, I got it from Kerso for 665 at the time I ordered and with 50 cash back thats 615 for a brand new lens.

If you get a filter for it thrown in then that would be a very good price.

The 24-105 is a good bit of kit and can obviously do things that the 24-70 can't. The 24-70 is the better bit of glass and by quite some way, so unless you really need the extra reach or the IS, it's a bit of a no brainer in my book. :)
