I bought a D600 tripod cheap last week as my tripod is dung and impossible to get level. This one is in great condition but won't let me put the camera in a portrait style if you know what I mean. Apologies for crap terminology. It tilts fine and stuff. The big panning lever is also a little long and jabs me in the shoulder when getting my eye to the viewfinder. I also seem to not be able to get the screw tight enough with my fingers when attaching the camera to the quick release plate i.e. the camera seems a little bit mobile on the plate when on the tripod. I really like the thing as it is solid as a rock but not sure about the head which I think is aimed at video.
What are my options? The head seems to be attached by a screw thread as if I wind the head anti clockwise for a while I can get it off.
I know bog all about tripods really so any advice would be appreciated.
You can certainly buy a bigger/better head to replace the one that's on the tripod, Redsnapper are popular these days on the forums.

That is the thing. Are heads and legs universally interchangeable then?

Watch out if you buy a manfrotto head, I have the D600 and I bought a manfrotto 486CR2 head. I ended up having to track to a weird sized screw for the manfrotto head and doing a DIY job on the legs to get the screw attached to the top of the central column.

Hmmm thanks for the tips guys. Sad thing is now I have no idea what to go for. More reading methinks.

Right I thought I would do a little experimentation before buying anything and today I borrowed a Manfrotto 484RC2 off a friend and the damn hole up the middle of it is too big for my Velbon.
How do I get round this?

You should be good to go with most heads then.

Nice one Bob. Perfect. Had a feeling there may be a thingy to manage this. Sadly after shelling out so much cash I cannot afford to feed the wife and child for the rest of the month but hey ho. :D
If you buy 33 of them you get free delivery, that should help surely?
