I currently have the 75 300 and I am thinking of upgrading, would the 55 250 IS be much of an upgrade?

It is mostly for the IS as I usually take hand held shots rather than use a tripod/monopod.

Thanks

Perhaps a monopod would be a cheaper and just as worthy upgrade?
Are you happy with the optics of the 75-300?

It's the softness of the picture quality, perhaps a monopod might be worth a try before spending money.

From what I've read the 75-300mm is not a great lens. I have a 90-300mm which is based on it and that is also quite soft.

If you are concerned about camera shake then as well as IS, a faster lens (i.e. lower F number) will help and using a higher ISO, but push the ISO too high and you'll start to see digital noise.

Do you have a nifty fifty?

I tried upping the ISO but noticed noise at 400.

No I don't have a nifty fifty.(yet)

well worth getting one IMHO - f/1.8 will give shutter speeds 8x faster than f/5

I have just upgraded my 90 - 300 to the 70 - 300 IS. The IS is amazing, makes getting sharp images so much easier. The 90 - 300 was as previously said, soft. the 55 - 250 IS should be a good lense too with the IS.
