hi guys an gals, ive got me a lovely nikon d40 and i want to upgrade my lens'. im looking at the sigma 2.8 17-70 hsm and the sigma 2.8 70-200 hsm. is anyone aware of any problems with these lens'? theyre a real good price and by what ive seen online they'll be just the job for what i want to shoot(motorsports&indoor portaits/gigs). any comments would be helpful cheers

I'd recommend looking at the new version of the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 with (af motor), but if you do decide to go for Sigma glass make sure you try before you buy or the seller has a good return policy, their quality control isn't quite what it could be (and yes, I do own some Sigma glass lol)

Looks like you want a fast medium telephoto. The Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 would be good but you may find the near end a little long for portraits and gigs. The Sigma 50-150 2.8 or Tokina 50-135mm 2.5 might suit you better.
The Sigma 17-70 is a 2.8-4.5 IIRC, not worth bothering with IMO, especially pitched against the Nikkor 18-70.

Aye, the 70-200 f/2.8 VR Nikon. Might be overkill on a D40 though......
Do you have a budget in mind?

second the tamron 17-500 f2.8, its what i use on my d40 and so much better than the kit lens!
if your lookign for telephoto then the 70-300vr is a decent lens, try second hand, usually around 250?!
