im looking in to doing sports photography with my d40 and would like a lens that can handle the speed of motorsport and poor light conditions if and when need be. so probably after a lens with a good long zoom and a wide aperture. im on a budget of around £300 any suggestions guys? or am i being unrealistic with my budget? cheers
Assuming thats a Nikon D40, I would go with the Nikkor 70-300 VR. :)
I think you are going to find it tough meeting your expectations with that budget ... sorry
Out of interest is the nikon 70-300 vr fast enough to focus for motor sport?

To be honest you'll not really get a "good" motorsport lens that will work with your D40 within your budget
If it's bright and sunny and you pump up the iso then a 70-300 VR will just about do the job, but the f/5.6 minimum aperture at 300mm is right at the limit of workable autofocus. I've shot speedboat racing with one on a D80, but I was at 1600 ISO in bright sunlight to get usable images.

In reasonable daylight the 70-300 VR will work but you will not get anything fast below 500, and then you're looking at a 3rd party 70-200 2.8

Exactly my advice as well.

It's AF-S, so it wont be slow by any means.

cheers guys, thats kinda confirmed what i had in my mind anyway. good just to air these things amongst the group.just a query, the vr on a lens would enable the shutter to be slower wouldnt it? obviously not too slow otherwise it would still be a blurred image. anyone know how the 'os' (optical stabaliser) on sigmas compares to vr on nikons?
