Added a Jessops (I Know) 2x converter and the first fairly bright time this afternoon to try it.
For the price behind the Sigma 70-300 it seems to work fairly well.

The Kenco TC from Onestop (http://www.onestop-digital.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=44_47&products_id=108) is very similarly priced to the Jessops one and is probably as good as the Canon original. Lots of people on here have the 1.4x version. Could really do with a TC and no TC shot to assess properly.
The Robin could do with a little more sharpening to just bring out the small feathers around his beak.
Looks as though you have found your optimum focal length though.
Thanks - I may get a 1.4 as that may be easier to handle with lighting. I am worried about too much sharpening as I was the cause of a saga on the subject a few weeks ago. The Robin was pretty much as shot to show the full frame - just through DxO and digital haze - sized and saved to web. I usually use the TLR capture and output sharpening set.

Do you have the sharpening etc turned off in the camera? It can be a fine line between not enough and too much but the thing to make sure is that you only sharpen in one place - ie at the output image.
Why not host the source images somewhere we can see if different results can be acheived using different workflow
