Oh no, my canon 40D has died on me, please help!

Had a cracking day in the Farnes today, only problem is my camera decided to malfunction. :'(
It is displaying an error (error 99) and not working at all. It is also displaying the following:

"Shooting is not possible, turn the power off and on again or re-install the battery."

I've done this and it still won't work. The manual doesn't give much information on this and was wondering if anyone has experienced this before.

Have you tried removing the memory card and turning it on. Then replacing the card. Had same problem on my dad's 30D and that did the trick...

Sorry to hear you are having problems Magpie. Never encountered it myself but I did remember another member having the same problem a while back so I've been digging and came up with this.

Is the lens fitted properly? I had this on a 300d and it was the lens not on right, or some dirt on the contacts. I took off the lens and refitted it and it all worked again.

Never experienced this but read various 'cures'. I think I'd try :


Change memory card
Change lens
Charge battery and or change to alternative one.
Check all contacts
Check warrantee

what lens are you using, I had a sigma that had to go back to them for repair as it would induce error 99 whenever it was fitted to my 30D

they fitted a new interrupter switch and it's fine now

try another lens

The "Error 99" is a catch all code for nothing in particular, often associated with 3rd party equipment.

So, remove and clean the lens contacts, same with the CF card and battery.

Thanks for all the advice so far. I will endevour to carry out what has been suggested.

I've been using the camera body with my 500mm lens and my 70-200mm lens. I've just tried it with my 24-70 and get the same problem. So, I reckon its definetly a problem with the body.

This is the first time a camera has broke on me, hopefully I'll get it sorted.

That's if it's lens related. remove the CF card and switch in on & off a couple of times - switch it on without a lens on it.....
