Hi all

As you may know/remember - I don't really 'get' Street Photography, and after an interesting debate a few weeks ago I was challenged to try it - so I have, yesterday in London on a long walk sightseeing

All comments welcomed - and I know they are all colour and Street is often BW - does that matter?

Anyway, (GULP) here goes...

I saw this with the TP chaps on Wednesday, but the light wasn't right. The intention is to show the art as looking a me as he's about to 'shoot' someone, so waiting for someone to move into the exact spot took a few moments

If this offends anyone, I'll remove it

What does this body-language tell you about their conversation? And more importantly, how happily or not they parted?

All of these were shot on a range of focal lengths from 18mm through to 200mm, with their respective lenses wide open

Not sure if this is strictly 'Street', but I quite enjoyed it anyway and I have quite a few more too

That is what I would class as street photography. Glad you "quite enjoyed" it :) Some lovely shots, not sure I am keen on the angles on some of them, but all quality shots (no suprise there) Looks like you found some propper character too :) I always just seem to end up with tons of shots of attractive ladies!

Thanks for your extraordinarily pleasant comments on my first attempt at 'Street'

Nope Natjag, this was all Friday's stroll with the missis - hence not as much photography as otherwise on such a walk on a nice day; just about to post my own Gherkin efforts too

Let's see if you appreciate those too then!

Cheers all

No. Six is very funny, did you intend it like that?

I really like No.'s Seven and Twelve, No.2 looks rather like male glamour photography, all about the subject, rather than his actions...

There are some interesting comments here guys, with several of you picking completely different 'best' images, which I find intriguing

Natjag - Gherkin shots posted now

Is that it ???

Where's the 'Shock & Awe' of ME having a crack at Street without considerable payment (not pavement btw - but payment!)

Added to most commentators nicely thinking I can do it too - I'm flabberghast (but in a pleasant & satisfying way :D)

Yep - I'm sure Barnsley folk have a thing or two to show these Londoners about faces -

Give it a couples of weeks until you're freer and perhaps we should have a go up north too!

Cheers Russ

I don't think I'd have approached it the same way had we not had the 'discussion/argument' on here about it, I guess it helped me focus my mind on what to look for; so thanks all for enlightening me there - I was particularly interested in making use of backgrounds when I could, or at least avoiding distracting ones

Sticking your camera in front of folk who don't expect it is a bit odd though at first, but no-one's reaction was the anticipated "FO" or 5-fingered mouth-massage

Most 'Street' I see is in B&W and although I did process some of these as B&W, I preferred the colour version - is B&W the prime way of presenting such images????

Funniest comment of the day was someone asking me if I was a Pro, then going on to ask if I was 'XXX' (can't remember who, sorry) who is a photojourno apparently - obviously I said 'No', but then thought - if I look like him, that's another short, fat, ugly tog out there - scary !!!

Awww, you dont need shock and awe from everyone else, and me also  I think theres some really good images in there, and I do like the angles that they have been taken at, it gives it a different sense and appeal from normal street that are taken straight.

I'm freer after next week, so fingers crossed? LOL

Stunning !

I remember that thread about you "not getting it" so whats your thoughts now ?

Sounds like you enjoyed yourself, Your clearly very good at it, the results speak for themselves. OK, so you didn't get paid, but you could !! Just look at number 7, thats got corporate/business type stock photo written all over it !!

Incidently, I like the quirky angles of some of the shots, and waiting for the right moment.....

Jeez - thanks BB

Just can't help thinking now some 'Street' tog is going to come along and slag them all off for something we've missed so far :shake:

The 'paid' bit was a joke - I do love taking photos whether paid or not, and have a very forgiving wife in this respect - she walked about 7 miles with me Friday and didn't moan once when I was stopping to take photos

Tricky bit though BB - my thoughts now on Street togging... Hell, I enjoyed it & I like many of the images I took - could I be a potential convert ???????? Seen the 'light' even !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks CT - Interesting comment on #4

Yep you guessed it though, shot at 18mm low down with flash set at +1 EV

I had the idea to take a few with strong foreground exposure against a thus darker background - this was actually my only attempt at such & I wasn't sure it worked either !!!

Either it's a crap idea, or I 'Must try harder'

So you enjoyed it eh! hehe ... I think we have a street convert. ;) You've certainly done it justice in my eyes.

Numbers 1, 3, and 10 for me. No. 1 is a nice study, I like the perspective quartering in over his left shoulder. No. 3 definitely gets your attention. Nice job. No. 10 is just an excellent subject well captured!

If there's one that just isn't working for me at all, it's Number 8. I find the focus in this one is definitely a bit too soft for my taste, and I'd really like the background more blurred to enhance the feeling of "aloneness" of the reader.

Thanks hunter20ga - more useful comments

Interesting on #8 though (the woman reading her map?) - taken at 200mm f2.8 on a D2Xs and Nikon's 70-200 VR lens it's nothing if not bitingly sharp in the original 20mb raw file - perhaps this 60kb jpeg loses that? Short of adding blur it's not possible to make that background much more OOF, but I know what you mean, and thanks for your constructive comments I will bear them in mind for any future shoot

Cheers FBBiker - re #6, I thought long & hard about that one bth - seemed a good joke at the time, but I can appreciate it can be taken as offensive too. I just wonder if it'd been a 'Whites' shop with a white guy in that position would anyone have even noticed the supposed humour?

I tend to shoot street on fast B&W film rated at 1600, 3200, or 6400, I think that a lot of people work along similar lines, and so the predominant force is still in B&W film due to the (as yet) superior low light/high speed performance.

Thanks for that...

Mine were all shot in good daylight so high ISOs just weren't necessary. On a few of mine (run as an action of course!) BW was a serious contender but on others I felt a waste of time

I have noticed most Street stuff is BW, and seen lots of Street togging later at night

One thing I aimed for, and missed, was people smoking as any Street shoot seems to capture a person with a fag  - no idea why, just seems to be in any series of such shots

Next time maybe...:D

Well Dave did you enjoy it and did you get anything out of this little exercise beside the images which are not bad for a first go bet if you did it again you now approach it differently.
Not a street photographer myself but there is an art to capturing people being interactive in an interesting sort way and in some of these you have achieved this so pat yourself on the back and give it another go. Well done

Excellent series, and I don’t get it! How is it you don’t get “street photography” when you’ve managed something like that? Well done ,

Shot no. 1, that’s Morgan Freeman taking a break from filmmaking!?!

Shot no. 3, looks like someone else is taking a shot at your subject! Good angle

Shot no. 6, your attempt to be “politically” correct cracked me up! Seriously, it did; even though I am sure you meant in genuinely.

Shot no. 7, looks like she just broke the news to him that she’s pregnant and he’s the father!

Shot no. 10, an elegant man with a purple lady’s bag!?! :nono: .. that's just my opniion :p

I can’t pick just the one that is wow, as they are all very well captured. Thanks for sharing.

To you others with 'sad' minds - honestly, it was a mid conversation capture and they kissed fondly before departing

Perhaps he'd agreed to father it - perhaps he'd agreed to pay for a termination - perhaps he'd agreed to a holiday in Spain instead of Turkey ??? Who knows, but it was amicable - honest!

Did it help to be in London and not Barnsley ?
My approach is always different when I'm away from my patch, it shouldn't be, but it is, self conscious crap.
3 & 6 really say something, but they all look considered even though they don't all talk.
I think the ones that don't talk are disadvantaged by distance, the up close and personal factor.
I think you've made great strides into street, its not as easy as you make it look.

6 is just a moment in time, the scene was there to capture, anybody could have seen it, any offence is manufactured in the viewers mind, but that is the objective, isn't it ?
The thought that it might be offensive reminds me of Gary Winogrands "zoo" (http://www.shanelavalette.com/journal/00/garrywinogrand01.jpg) shot....provocative

I think its worth pointing out....your legs....and those shorts.....and your relationship with.......self-consciousness.....

If I make 'Street' look easy, it can only be because it is pretty easy - I didn't have much of a clue before having a go at it so any 'skill' shown is only that of any other seasoned tog

Easier away from Barnsley? Defo NO - Barnsley folk would let you shoot their arse if you asked nicely enough I'm sure! Certainly if you smiled when asking

And my legs are my best bits... :'(:'(:'(

These are great! Not sure how I missed this thread until now. The bloke in No.5 was probably looking at St Pauls, its dirty and crappy viewed from there.

For someone who claims not to get street you have a stonkingly good set of pics there. What can I say.

In my opinion, No 3 is a world class photograph and you should be very proud of your work. Fantastic.

Thanks 'Badger UK' - honestly, my Street learning tool has been a few threads and discussion on here - never even thought of snapping strangers before

Even yesterday morning when I told wifey what I had as an idea she thought I'd be punched first - just shows eh ?

Hi DD

FWIW I think Shutterman's version of your No.3 is more powerful, maybe because it's B&W, but maybe because the people are the other way around, although I prefer your framing:

Street is my favorite type of photography and I've been doing it for years and I've never had any trouble. Mind you, I do feel better when I'm using a 200mm lens! :-)

Maybe I don't find it easy then, even at distance with an 80-200 there are other peeps around that consider what you are doing.
Its not an event, or in studio, its in the street, we don't want peeps posing for shots or to lose our front teeth:lol:
That's why I think it helps to shoot in touristy locations, blend in....kinda.

not that Barnsley isn't.....touristy...:suspect:

To avoid people posing, I've tended to find hidden vantage points, or make it look like I'm photographing buildings or trees or something near them.

The best was hanging from a parapet on a multistory car park, nobody looked there EVER, it was scary, yet extremely fun.

Cheers HWG - I must disagree with your sig though - I dislike returning 'home' maybe I'm a wonderer at heart?

DD

Yes we are wanderers too, and we love travelling, but after being away from home for a while we get the urge to return; and when we get back home; walk down to the beach which is 200yds from home; we always say "Why did we go away - there is nowhere else as beautiful as here." I suppose really it depends where you live, and we are very, very lucky in that respect.

Hi all

#3

I saw this with the TP chaps on Wednesday, but the light wasn't right. The intention is to show the art as looking a me as he's about to 'shoot' someone, so waiting for someone to move into the exact spot took a few moments

If this offends anyone, I'll remove it

"Alone, all Alone, in a see of crowded faces" - Covent Garden on a very busy Saturday !

Loving the ones where subject has some form of relation to the background, 3 is my favourite because this, framing was spot on having the art lined up with its target, and for me it was more interesting having the main subject facing you rather than the back of them.

Well done

That's a dam good set there Dave.

I will nip down to Barnsley or Sheff if you fancy a wander round them, trying the same.

I've known a few Barnsley girls in my time, it's amazing what a pint, a smile and a geordie accent will get you!!!:D

I think 3 & 6 stand out because its "just not only people" there is a little "something" going on in the background too. which adds just that certain
"je ne sais quoi"
but they're all good anyway

Thanks m8

But it's really not hard at all, every shot was on AP with whatever lens shot wide open

I tried to find either an interesting or not distracting background and pick the best position/light for it, especially if it adds to the pic (as in #3), then waited a few mins for someone to appear in the right spot - so timing is key I think

This was a busy Friday, so waiting for people to move out of shot meant a few crackingly interesting folk were missed, but hey, that happens a lot in Street I guess

Have you a thread with your Street stuff on???

There's some pretty good ones in there, a few composition & exposure issues but that's probably more to do with you picking trickier subjects or fussier backgrounds than I did

Like the blokes lent up against the wall though
