Someone has been enjoying himself, not sure with, but nothing a clean T-Shirt and sponge wont cure. As for your son... :D
Now to crit. It looks like you've shop'd it ( a tad too much and badly). The background is too black (?maybe you managed this?) and there is a weird thing behind his ear. There are no strandy hairs sticking out from the top of his head, but there are in other areas.
Still he's a sweet kid
prob badly pp'd by me paul..
this was my 1st try at this.. i thought the idea was to get the b/g as black as ....well black..
the strage thing behind the ear is his hair.. there is no hair strands on top of his head...;)
this is another shot which shows his hair and more of the b/g

just my 2 cents worth but he looks like he's been photoshopped in, like was said above the background is too "clean" low key images tend to have a smallish grey tint on the background even though its black.
What's wrong with me...I love it..those eyes are just gorgeous and as for the dribble or whatever stains on his top....yes i remember those days. My boy is now 19. He was as lovely as that once but it seems a very long time ago!!:)
Haha, what a little scruff bag :D:D

I think it's a fine photograph. The only bit that looks too PPd to me is around his head where it looks as if the black background sort of wraps around the top of his head.
Lovely looking little fella with gorgeous big blue eyes. I have two nippers around his sort of age so foody faces are a familiar thing
Darkish sheet? :D
I couldn't understand why I couldn't get the lasso tool to select the bg. ;)

Nice MD - I have a few similar black backgrounds taken on my white paper background - which is a way cool way to confuse a client :D
DD(2)s comment on the black wrapping around him is why often on such dark backgrounds one or both of the rear lights are turned to light the back of the subject
Try it, and keep having fun
Glad the light's at the right height too!

Well do you have black sheets CT ???
A bit too Goth for most of us methinks
DD
LOL. No, I don't, but MD woud be well advised to invest in something like a nice piece of black velvet if he wants to pursue this style, which I do actually like. :D
Changing a background colour in processing when there are fine stray hairs like that is one of the most difficult things to do well and is far better done by getting it right in camera. Once you've lost those fine hairs, the cut -out look is inevitable.

I hope you don't think I 'cut' people out CT ??? Never done it in my life !!!
In smaller studios then yes a black background is of course useful, but I did some black backgrounds shots recently just by moving the subject too far away for the white paper's reflectance to affect the exposure - hence it's a white background that records as black
The beauty of this is it's then so easy to have any shade of grey you fancy too, or add gels for a different colour entirely (which you can't do with a black background)

LOL. I wouldn't think you'd do that for one moment DD. Unfortunately this belief persists that Photoshop can always put it right if you get it wrong in camera, but it really aint so.

Hair, or some such messy & fine subject detailing, is why I don't do cut-outs
Venture has a great trick for it though on their arty side, they seem to select around people very closely then give the selection a massive 'Stroke' line - instantly creating a more 'Art' than photo look and solving the cut-out problem too
 to such lateral thinking

all comments taken on board..
thanks for all the feedback..

Tell you what mate, that looks great in b&w.
