Love the DOF on this shot and the detail in the iris.
I am seeing it as a little overexposed and would adjust the levels a tad as my only criticism, although I am on a cheap lcd at work, so it may just be me.

What lens were you using?

You realise I will now have to go track down our local ranger in Wimbledon Common and see if I can get a similar shot :D

:clap:Nicely focused and good DOF Mark, though I agree with oxygen you could adjust the levels a bit more and maybe sharpen the in focus area a little more. This is where you need to sharpen on a separate layer and use a layer mask. How's the new book going?

Duplicate layer
Sharpen by any method you prefer.
On the layer you have sharpened, click icon at bottom, add layer mask.
Type D to change colour palette to default black foreground, white background
Click mask to make sure mask is selected.
Choose brush, and then paint on the mask with black over the bits you don't want sharpened.
That's it. Good luck.

It should be the same in PS7. Where exactly did you get stuck. Did you manage to add the layer mask. If so then what you need to do is on the tools palette where you have the little swatch with foreground and backround, make sure its at its default state, usually by typing D, but if this doesn't work just click on the little small overlapping black and white icon at the bottom of the toolbar, and then if the black was isn't to the top, just click the little arrow to swap them over.

Choose the brush, and then click on the mask to make sure that you are painting on this and not onto the picture. Then with a black brush just paint over the bits you don't want sharpened. When you paint on the mask you won't see any colour appear on the picture just black will appear on the icon mask, but the sharpening will disappear. If you make a mistake just change over to a white brush and repaint over the mistake and it will come back'
Hope this helps, Barbara

Glad you got it in the end. Remember though you can use this mask technique for lots of other things too though, not just for sharpening. It's a good thing to learn.
