I currently have my 300D up for sale with the kit lens, as I want to upgrade my body to something with a faster/larger buffer and selectable AF Servo, most likely I'll be going for a 20D.

Anyway, I currently have a nifty fifty and also a 55-250mm IS. In the long run I planned to buy a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 as a replacement for the kit lens, but I can't afford one of those at the moment as I have a few other things to pay for.

Obviously this will leave me with just a 50mm & 55-250, rather than spending ~£30 on another kit lens to tie me over, is there anything else relatively cheap that will perform better to tie me over until I've saved for the Tamron?

I'd just stick with the 50mm until you can go for the Tamron, put the money you would spend on something else towards it so you get it quicker...

before i read the lead post I was going to suggest the tamron 17-50 f2.8
cheap as lenses go, nothing else goes f2.8 through for the price that I could find.
noisier than canon lenses but still nice I think, glad I bought mine

Glad I saw this thread as I was about to ask what a good replacement for kit lans would be.

Well, I'm in a further predicament now. I've just bought a 20D and it comes with the BG-E2 grip.

I've never used a camera with a vertical grip, so may well find it a bit cumbersome?

With that in mind is it worth keeping, or worth selling to help fund a new 'kit' lens replacement? I'm not sure how long I'll be able to get by with just a 50mm and 55-250mm, although I suppose I could spend £30 on a kit lens for now.
