View Full Version : Rules review?

Just wondering if the recent changes might be a good time to review some of the rules?

There is nothing at present I can't live with but would like to see....

1, Picture size limit increased. The 800 pixels is OK (though bigger for height would not be a problem) but the file size of 160k seems small. How about 250k(or more) ?

2, Critiques being one picture only. If you've had 2 or 3 goes at the same or very similar shot why not show them all?

Very short list from me but others may have things to raise.

we are indeed reviewing the rules, as and when changes are made we will amend or replace the stickies. Eventually they will be in the FAQ

I think we agree with you on point 2 Robert, and the 1 pic rule in Critique will probably go, but bear with us while we thrash it out. :)

We're currently waging the decisions on these, based on some snail racing in the mods room.

If mine romps home, then we're good to go, and the critique rule gets changed.
Check back next week for a progress report. Should be past the halfway line then....

......Goooo Simon! (the snail).

As an aside, we're working on changing a few rules round here to make it a more relaxed and better place for you guys.
We're also going to be eventually making use of the FAQ button, so it won't be a generic vb3 FAQ, but forum specific to us, and will hopefully include answers to all but the most strange of questions :)
Like Matty says, stickies are all going to be overhauled too. There have been lots of loose ends hanging around these forums, jobs that needed doing that never got done, suggestions that never made it past the first post etc. It's all gonna change.....and for the better

Any suggestions you guys have will be more than welcomed.
We have a big sticky in the mods room at the moment, outlining all current suggestions and we thrash it out in the thread, once we (by majority rule) give the suggestiont the go ahead, it gets put on the to do list :)

I've not said much so far but I'm pleased to see things are going again and well done for that guys. My only point for the future is the tolerance level for swearing and dubious jokes. I can mix it with the best at that game but I am considerate of others. Just food for thought.

part of the new rules will be NWS titles for 'rude' jokes, and our swear filter is going to be updated to be more vigorous. we will also be looking out for people trying to get round the filter, that wont be tolerated :suspect: though if people find a post they dont like, hit the moderator button and the post will be looked at, we cant get everywhere, so we rely on members to let us know when something is bugging them!:)

Better still, don't swear.
Use an appropriate word/s to get your points across.

Well they do say swearing is a lack of a decent vocabulary...

i agree with that its tricky to get a 800x600 image below 160k whilst opreserving detail, 200k would be a bit nicer and wouldnt make much in the way of loading times for the majority of people, only those on 56k would notice it and thats neglegable because its going to take ages to load an image anyway, owuld you really notice a 20% increase in loading time?

matty
01-05-2006, 15:22
we are doing some comparisons on image detail at 160 and 200k, we also dont want people to have their work stolen!

Not wanting to scare off new members or anything but I've noticed this last few weeks more folk signing up, putting something up for sale and never posting again.

Since we want to encourage members who wil contribute and not just make use of a free selling platform, could I suggest that access to the classified adverts forum is only activated after say 3 months and a post count of 50 or something like that?

Joe T

I agree. We dont want this to be a place where people just come and sell. it should be a benefit for the use of members, not those who only want to sell something. I think Steep is right.

The problem is that spamming can become an issue. The mods (and others) would have to be aware of this and monitor for it. OcUK (yes, that dreaded word) has a simialr problem with its member's market. They have introduced a 100 postcount rule, and iirc this has been pushed up again due to abuse.

If we decided that such a rule is unworkable (not necessarily so) then it might be worthwhile putting some kind of stickied warning in the for sale forum to ensure that no problems arise. Again, this is difficult as we cant accuse people who register onyl to sell as being fraudsters or similar!

Its a very tricky problem, and one that will only rise as the forum expands.

Marcel

We did have some sort of rule like that before the renaming IIRC, but it was horribly strict, and not many used the forum.

I'll kick this back to the Staff Room, and we'll certainly look at the option again :)

Steep

Perhaps forget the post count thing but set a 2 or 3 month delay before new users can see that forum?

CT
19-09-2006, 09:53
I think Steep has a point here. After all you wouldn't be too happy about buying off fleabay from someone with no feedback - in the same way, allowing new members to advertise goods for sale straight away is a bit dodgy when we know nothing about them?

Marcel
19-09-2006, 10:31
Well we can either restrict access by post count or member time. I've had a quick look at how we can do it within the forum software, and it's relatively easy enough.

How about restricting members from starting their own threads, but allow them access to the forum, and reply to other threads....That way new users can't sell their own stuff till they meet the right criteria, but they can still buy from others.?

Keltic Ice Man

that sounds a real good idea Marcel. Folks might come to buy and thats ok if they have just got some new kit they are more likely to stick around.

Certainly a fairer way of doing things, but as per CT's point, you wouldn't want to sell to someone you know nothing about, either! Although that could be at the sellers discretion, of course.

This is underway BTW.

The new membergroup has been created, and I was waiting for the forum to add most of the users to it, before I restricted the permissions from standard users...if that makes sense :)

Marcel
25-09-2006, 11:27
I've now turned off the the ability to create new threads in the Classifieds forum for those who don't meet the criteria.

Minimum of 10 posts and be registered for at least 7 days.

If there are any problems, let us know :)

On another subject.....

Any way to stop smilies being counted as images in a post? 10 images per post is a reasonable limit but if I do :) ;) and :( in the text I've lost 3 images!

Marcel
25-09-2006, 12:43
Unfortunately not, it's the way vBulletin works.

We can always increase the number of max images above 10 if it's really needed. ;)

Hoodi
25-09-2006, 14:21
What is the point on image-per-post restrictions on a photography forum, anyhoo? If someone has more than 10 photos they want to share they'll just make another reply in their thread!

Marcel
25-09-2006, 16:05
It's basically to stop people filling the pages with animated gifs, like you see on some other (especially US based) forums. You know the sort, where they end up just horribly slowing the page down.

The actual image per post restriction though, is just a vbulletin setting. I think it was default at 6 but we upped it to 10.

If you want though, just give us the nod and we can up it :)

My 2 recent 18 pic posts I had to prepare in notepad and paste in so my second post in the thread was not so slow someone could post in between - so upping to 20 would suit me. I can get by without smilies for one post :)

Matt Charlton
26-09-2006, 09:04
yeah 20 might be more advisable, or even lifting it completely - I havent seen any evidence of that kind of smiley abuse and it could soon be hit on the head if we had any problems arise with it. I guess the consideration for 56k users would still be around but there are less and less of them now and most people who are into photography and looking at pictures "should" be on broadband by now.

I do that, but I only go for 3 images per post. I also post the same (or similar) threads elsewhere - on a site with a much lower limit (4 I think).

For those posting lots of pics, no disrespect to anybody at all, but can they not just place a Part#1 and Part#2 in the header.

In other forums I have managed, mainly gaming forums, abuse is strife as soon as someone allows for more things to be added or rules relaxed to the point of breaking. No-one likes to revoke something once it has been given so for me I think sticking with the current regime and splitting posts would be more beneficial although I do understand it can be a pain.
