I think it suffers because the lillies seem to be past their best. There's something on the left hand edge which is a distraction. Is that the colour of the lillies or some flash effect?

Doesnt work for me, as rh1944 has said, they are past their best. And the most left hand flower has a horrible shadow cast inside.

And whats that in the bottom right corner? Some blue thing?

Would agree with all that has been said.
Yellow is a difficult colour to control at the best of times.
Why not try again with some better blooms and concentrate on one flower head, you have a decent macro lens. Also try natural light or continuous lighting indoors you'll have more control.

Cheers

yeah,i didn't think it worked very well either...the left hand edge you refer to is a glass thats just in shot, but i didn't crop anything out as i only wanted to know wether the technique worked or not.

thanks for your honest opinion all...much appreciated.

Flower quality issues aside, the flash is too close and making intense shadows and bright reflections. You might be able to bounce it up to a white card or diffuse it with tissue etc to soften the light.

thanks robert...the camera/flash setup was only about 2 feet away, and i think i'll need to invest in a diffuser of some sort soon....

Unfortunately the flash has saturated the shot - natural light or a diffuser would be softer & bring out the orange/yellow of these lilies
